I’ve just had the most crazy week in New Orleans attending my first Mardi Gras in this city that needs no excuse to celebrate with a parade. Or in this case, days of parades that finish on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), because Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent.

Yes, believe it or not, this week of multiple parades is all about the Easter calendar. In 1892 the Rex Parade introduced the mardi gras colours of purple, gold and green. Purple Represents Justice. Green Represents Faith. Gold Represents Power.

But there is every colour under the sun, as you’ll see from my photos below – including my prep for riding in the Orpheus Parade on Lundi Monday.

This is my 9th visit to the Crescent City and I have written my Ultimate Guide to New Orleans listing all the very best things to do and explore here in the French Quarter – and why I suggest you pick one of these French Quarter hotels because if you don’t have a car, this is where you’ll be hanging out all the time.

Then I have this post with my four favorite music venues in New Orleans, including one hidden gem out in Treme.

A little bit excited to be riding with Orpheus Krewe in New Orleans
My polyester costume – big enough to fit over my actual clothes
There are 20+ floats in here with 500 of us all dressed up and ready to ride
I’m on Pop Goes the Weasel – pulled by a grunty John Deere
These are the 27 floats of Orpheus and this year’s theme
The three Orpheus clowns – with no idea how much our shoulders and back will hurt tomorrow!
Sorting out the throws in the warehouse before we roll
Safety first. Harnessing myself in
I found my pozzy
Yes, we will be throwing ALL this stuff to screaming bystanders
The beaded necklace hooks are handy
Can you see 8 of us in amongst the throws (read tat)!
My station
Families arrive early on St Charles Ave and set up. Trolleys are as much for the throws as they are to drag the kids home!
These ladder box seats are great for the little kids. Just gotta try not to wack one in the head with a toy!
Pre parade funsy on the street
And we’re rolling down St Charles!
This is the Krewe of Zulu on St Charles for the parade on Mardi Gras Tuesday.
We got to stand on the balcony of New Orleans & Co offices while Kelly Shulz does live cross TV interviews all over the US every 10 minutes
Most of the parades come past the Sheraton Hotel on Canal Street, so you can get a grandstand pass when you book
Madame Curie float on Mardi Gras, New Orleans
The shocking amount of plastic waste, broken beads and other throws left behind each night after the parades
Walking down Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras
Throwing beads from the balcony at Cornet. Book a spot with Bourbon Street Balconies.
Bead throwing on Bourbon Street
How about this for an action shot!
