That&#8217;s <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/sources.news\/p\/humanoid-robots-are-metas-next-ar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to Sources' Alex Heath;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">according to <em>Sources<\/em>&#8216; Alex Heath<\/a>, who spoke to Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth and reports that much like Apple, Google and Tesla, Meta is researching robotics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 engadget-charcoal\">Unlike those other companies, though, Meta apparently isn&#8217;t all that focused on competing in hardware. It has a &#8220;Metabot&#8221; in the works, but its real goal is to create software that other companies can license, much like Google does with Android. &#8220;Software is the bottleneck,&#8221; according to Bosworth, and the hope is that the combined powers of Meta&#8217;s robotics team \u2014 led by <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/leaked-memo-meta-humanoid-robots-hires-ex-cruise-realreal-ceo-2025-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Marc Whitten;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Marc Whitten<\/a>, the former CEO of Cruise \u2014\u00a0 and its <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/mark-zuckerberg-shares-a-confusing-vision-for-ai-superintelligence-153944322.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:highly publicized Superintelligence Labs;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">highly publicized Superintelligence Labs<\/a> can produce a solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 engadget-charcoal\">That work apparently starts with the development of a &#8220;world model&#8221; that can help a robot &#8220;do the software simulation required to animate a dexterous hand,&#8221; but will presumably extend to more complicated movements and tasks down the road. <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/meta-is-reportedly-working-on-humanoid-robots-that-help-with-chores-192453416.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:In February 2025;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">In February 2025<\/a>, Meta was reportedly looking at building a robot that could handle household chores like cleaning or folding laundry. Given how early everything sounds, that&#8217;s likely a long way off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 engadget-charcoal\">Meta isn&#8217;t alone in pursuing robotics. Apple is reportedly working on its own <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/apples-tabletop-robot-companion-rumored-for-2027-launch-204904807.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:home robots;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">home robots<\/a>, starting with a table-mounted arm with a display. Tesla has regularly demoed versions of its <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/teslas-latest-optimus-robot-can-handle-an-egg-without-breaking-it-154610781.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Optimus robot;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Optimus robot<\/a> to the public, though often in highly-controlled scenarios. Meta has yet to realize its goal of usurping the smartphone with AR glasses.
