DeVeaux was dogsitting for one of their old teachers at the Oakland School for the Arts when they wrote their new album\u2019s closing track, \u201cSafe Place (Dear B.).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew I really wanted this song on the project,\u201d DeVeaux says, adding that it felt like a beautiful place to land after hearing the emotional rollercoaster of the full-length record.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in the Bay Area has shaped DeVeaux\u2019s artistry in a multitude of ways. \u201cOakland really has taught me to be fearless,\u201d the artist explains, \u201cespecially as a Black, queer person who sings music that maybe isn\u2019t your typical [genre] that you\u2019d expect.\u201d DeVeaux defines themselves as a neo-soul vocalist and songwriter.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, DeVeaux earns that \u201cvocalist\u201d title with their skillful and raw delivery, as the artist effortlessly embellishes the track with vocal runs worthy of an Olympic gold medal. \u201cI did probably at least 15 takes,\u201d they reveal, \u201cbecause I was just being really anal about the way I wanted it to sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/news\/2025\/09\/21\/b-deveaux-safe-place-dear-b\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sunday Music Drop is a weekly radio series hosted by the KQED weekend news team.
