I love when you walk out of the theater after seeing a really good movie and everything just feels crisper. Then, you google everyone involved, get excited to chat with anyone who\u2019s seen the movie in question, and find yourself still thinking about it weeks later. Here\u2019s one movie from this year that did it for me\u2026<\/p>\n

\"sorry<\/p>\n

Sorry, Baby<\/a><\/em> bowled me over. Eva Victor\u2019s directorial debut, which they also wrote and starred in, follows Agnes through a few years of her life, sequenced out of order. There\u2019s \u201cThe Year With The Baby\u201d and \u201cThe Year With The Really Good Sandwich,\u201d but also \u201cThe Year With The Bad Thing.\u201d When Eva shared the movie poster on Instagram, they confirmed that \u201cnothing bad happens to the cat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, it is Agnes to whom the bad thing happens. \u201cI wrote this film because there\u2019s a part of my experience of trauma that I haven\u2019t seen on-screen often: the part where you\u2019re confused,\u201d Eva said during a Sundance interview<\/a>. \u201cI spent years floating, just trying to accept that I went through something bad.\u201d The movie \u201chonors those years lost,\u201d as they put it. To write the script, Eva holed up in Maine one winter with their cat and many cans of split pea soup.<\/p>\n

The warm friendship between Agnes and Lydie (Naomi Ackie) is the central love story animating the movie. But, as Lydie\u2019s life carries her away from the small town where they met during grad school, Agnes feels stuck. Getting an impressive teaching job at the university means staying in a place marred by a devastating experience during her time as a student. \u201cBad thing\u201d is a euphemism, but also, with its childlike clarity, a perfect description.<\/p>\n

Offering a really moving portrait of trauma\u2019s reverberations and one person\u2019s recovery, Sorry, Baby <\/em>is also very funny.\u00a0In the theater, I laughed a lot and cried a little. I loved Agnes and would\u2019ve been happy to spend a hundred years with her. Of the movie\u2019s reception, Eva recently told the L.A. Times<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0\u201cI keep hearing, \u2018Oh, Agnes is so awkward.\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018What the hell?\u2019 I\u2019m very humbled by people\u2019s reactions to how bizarre they think that character is because I\u2019m like: \u2018Oh, I thought she was acting legitimately normal, but okay.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
