For almost 22 months, people\u2019s hearts have been breaking, across borders, during the Israel-Gaza conflict. Parents in Gaza are losing their homes, their loved ones, and their children<\/a>, wrapped in white shrouds<\/a>. Doctors in Gaza operate on children \u2014 sometimes their own \u2014 without any anesthesia; American doctors<\/a> who visit Gaza speak out in despair. Families in Israel pray for the return of hostages and fear rising antisemitism worldwide; families of hostages<\/a> nearly unanimously call for ceasefire.<\/p>\n And now Gazans are dying of starvation<\/a> due in large part to Israel\u2019s blockage of humanitarian aid at the border. Mothers in Gaza can offer no reassurance when their children ask, \u201cMama, when will we eat?\u201d<\/a> Parents have no formula or breast milk to feed their newborns<\/a>. We watch from around the world with mounting horror; asking what we can do, how we can help, if we are in fact losing our minds, as we see videos of children so hungry they are licking a truck<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Over the last week, people have been speaking loudly about this starvation crisis in Gaza, described as \u201cthe worst-case scenario of famine<\/a>.\u201d The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification said recent developments \u2014 including \u201cincreasingly stringent blockades\u201d by Israel \u2014 have \u201cdramatically worsened\u201d the situation. The United Nations\u2019 World Food Program<\/a> declared that the hunger crisis in Gaza has reached \u201cnew and astonishing levels of desperation, with a third of the population not eating for multiple days in a row<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n Jewish leaders and organizations are speaking out, as well. A group of high-profile Israeli public figures<\/a> called for \u201ccrippling sanctions\u201d to be imposed on Israel, demanding an immediate ceasefire and for Israel to end their blockage of food, water, medicine, and power into Gaza. Two prominent Israeli rights groups<\/a> \u2014\u00a0 B\u2019Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel \u2014\u00a0declared that their country is committing genocide. Rabbis<\/a> demanded that food aid reach starving families in Gaza.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is no higher calling as a Jewish mother than to feed the babies and fill the bellies,\u201d says writer Bess Kalb<\/a> on Instagram. \u201cThis is simply \u2018never again.\u2019 Right now.\u201d<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n What can we do? \u201cThere is no excuse for the world to stand by and watch two million human beings suffer on the brink of full-blown famine,\u201d says Jos\u00e9 Andr\u00e9s<\/a>, the founder of World Central Kitchen<\/a>. \u201cThis is not a natural disaster triggered by drought or crop failures. It\u2019s a man-made crisis, and there are man-made solutions that could save lives today.\u201d Andr\u00e9s outlines a four-step plan<\/a>, including opening humanitarian corridors to all aid groups, increasing the production of hot meals, feeding Gazans where they are (instead of requiring them to travel to dangerous distribution points; Israeli forces have shot 1000+ Gazans<\/a> who were trying to reach aid), and, finally, preparing a million meals per day, versus tens of thousands.<\/p>\n Gazans must feel so trapped and desperate. If my children were starving, I would want everyone in the world to stand and shout for help. Please join us in speaking about the crisis in Gaza \u2014 below are a few ways to do so.
