It\u2019s reasonable to pull a paper for major errors or suspected misconduct \u2014 but debates and disagreements over the findings are part of the scientific process, said study co-author Ariel Anbar of Arizona State University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne doesn\u2019t retract a paper because the interpretation is controversial, or even because most disagree with the interpretation,\u201d wrote Anbar in an email. \u201cAt least, that hasn\u2019t been the case until now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Science<\/em> has more frequently retracted papers for reasons beside fraud in recent years, wrote Thorp and Vada Vinson, <em>Science<\/em>\u2019s executive editor,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/blog-post\/last-step-long-process-arsenic-life?utm_campaign=ScienceMagazine&amp;utm_medium=ownedSocial&amp;utm_source=twitter\">in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NASA helped fund the original work.
