This significant anniversary reflects the enduring commitment of Nigerians to the principles of freedom, participation, and constitutional order.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s civilian rule is both exceptional and symbolic, and it affirms the resilience of the Nigerian people and the strength of the institutions that have evolved since the country\u2019s return to democratic rule in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis milestone is a powerful reminder of how far we have come as a nation,\u201d said Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation. \u201cIt is also a call to action\u2014to strengthen our democracy further, protect civil liberties, and ensure that every Nigerian feels the impact of good governance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While May 29, 2025 marked exactly 26 years since the return of democracy, June 12, now designated as Democracy Day, commemorates the legacy of Nigeria\u2019s 1993 presidential elections\u2014controversially aborted by the military government\u2014and honors those who fought for democratic restoration. This year\u2019s celebration will reflect not only on Nigeria\u2019s political journey but also on the growing role of youth, media, and cultural expression in shaping national dialogue, and civic participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigeria\u2019s young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow they are active participants in democracy today,\u201d said the Minister. \u201cFrom digital activism to entrepreneurship, they are using every tool at their disposal to influence the direction of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Africa\u2019s most populous nation, with over 220 million citizens and one of the continent\u2019s most dynamic media and creative sectors, Nigeria continues to inspire global conversations about resilience, civic engagement, and soft power through music, film, and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government will host a series of national events, dialogues, and commemorations to mark 2025 Democracy Day.
