I often scheduled lunches with her, and more often than not, she would cancel. Once, I was waiting for her at a French restaurant (before the days of cell phones) when the hostess approached and said, \u2018Are you Robin? I\u2019m so sorry, honey. Your mom just called, and she\u2019s not coming.\u2019 I burst into tears, and the woman immediately offered to buy my lunch. I thanked her but said no. Instead, I ordered a meal and sat by myself. Just before I left, she came up to my table, laid a hand on my shoulder, and gently put down a box of baked treats from their bakery. I still tear up when I think of that incredibly kind gesture from a stranger. (And on a wonderful side note, my mom is about to hit her 10-year anniversary of getting sober!)\u201d<\/p>\n
