{"id":94419,"date":"2025-05-09T04:10:12","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T04:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neclink.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/09\/microsoft-employees-are-banned-from-using-deepseek-app-president-says\/"},"modified":"2025-05-09T04:10:12","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T04:10:12","slug":"microsoft-employees-are-banned-from-using-deepseek-app-president-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neclink.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/09\/microsoft-employees-are-banned-from-using-deepseek-app-president-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft employees are banned from using DeepSeek app, president says\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft employees aren\u2019t allowed to use DeepSeek due to data security and propaganda concerns, Microsoft vice chairman and president Brad Smith said in a Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/2025\/5\/winning-the-ai-race-strengthening-u-s-capabilities-in-computing-and-innovation_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">hearing<\/a> today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt Microsoft we don\u2019t allow our employees to use the DeepSeek app,\u201d Smith said, referring to DeepSeek\u2019s application service (which is available on both desktop and mobile).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith said Microsoft hasn\u2019t put DeepSeek in its app store over those concerns, either.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/03\/deepseek-the-countries-and-agencies-that-have-banned-the-ai-companys-tech\/\">lots of organizations and even countries have imposed restrictions on DeepSeek<\/a>, this is the first time Microsoft has gone public about such a ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith said the restriction stems from the risk that data will be stored in China and that DeepSeek\u2019s answers could be influenced by \u201cChinese propaganda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeepSeek\u2019s privacy policy <a href=\"https:\/\/chat.deepseek.com\/downloads\/DeepSeek%E9%9A%90%E7%A7%81%E6%94%BF%E7%AD%96.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">states<\/a> it stores user data on Chinese servers. Such data is subject to Chinese law, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawinfochina.com\/display.aspx?id=23733&amp;lib=law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">mandates<\/a> cooperation with the country\u2019s intelligence agencies. Since DeepSeek is open source, anybody can download the model, store it on their own servers, and offer it to their clients without sending the data back to China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, however, doesn\u2019t remove other risks like the model spreading propaganda or generating insecure code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Senate hearing, Smith said that Microsoft had managed to go inside DeepSeek\u2019s AI model and \u201cchange\u201d it to remove \u201charmful side effects.\u201d Microsoft did not elaborate on exactly what it did to DeepSeek\u2019s model, referring TechCrunch to Smith\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its initial launch of DeepSeek on Azure, Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/deepseek-r1-is-now-available-on-azure-ai-foundry-and-github\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">wrote<\/a> that DeepSeek underwent\u00a0\u201crigorous red teaming and safety evaluations\u201d before it was put on Azure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While we can\u2019t help pointing out that DeepSeek\u2019s app is also a direct competitor to Microsoft\u2019s own Copilot internet search chat app, Microsoft doesn\u2019t ban all such chat competitors from its Windows app store.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perplexity is available in the Windows app store, for instance.
