Last night, my phone started buzzing. \u201cTurn on the TV!\u201d said my uncle. \u201cDid we know about this?!!\u201d asked my sister-in-law Emily. \u201cTonight\u2019s Jeopardy!\u201d wrote CoJ contributor Kelly Dawson<\/a>, along with a photo she snapped in her living room:<\/p>\n

On the screen, the Jeopardy prompt was, \u201cDying of lung cancer, Paul Kalanithi attempted to answer what makes life worth living in \u2018When Breath Becomes\u2019 this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, I immediately called my sister, Lucy<\/a>. Long-time readers will know that she and Paul were married for eight years before he died in 2015. She helped shepherd his memoir \u2014 When Breath Becomes Air<\/a> \u2014 to publication the following year.<\/p>\n

On the phone, Lucy and I first laughed about the game show itself. Can you imagine if someone asked the question, \u201cWhat is air?\u201d And you answered, \u201cDying of lung cancer, Paul Kalanithi attempted to answer what makes life worth living in \u2018When Breath Becomes\u2019<\/a> this.\u201d A truly wild answer, haha.<\/p>\n

But my sister was touched and happy that Paul\u2019s memoir is still part of the cultural conversation. \u201cOne of the things that really surprised me after Paul died was that he actually died<\/em>,\u201d she said in a recent Big Salad issue<\/a> (gift link). \u201cHe\u2019d had late-stage cancer for two years, and I even knew he was going to die that very day, but when someone actually dies, they just disappear. They just vanish. It felt so shocking to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

We always visit Paul\u2019s grave when we visit San Francisco, and Lucy and her daughter go regularly with friends and family, especially on days like New Year\u2019s Eve or Paul\u2019s birthday. \u201cSometimes I go alone, especially when I don\u2019t feel like myself,\u201d she told me<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ll lie on him, and then I\u2019ll feel better. On our wedding anniversary, I\u2019ll bring him a lemon from our lemon tree.\u201d<\/p>\n
