When I saw a hooded Wolf (Wagner Moura) chase after the adorable Puss (Antonio Banderas) with twin sickles like a hidden character in Soulcalibur <\/em>in 2022\u2019s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish<\/em>, I did not think, \u201cYeah, this is perfect for a live-action prestige horror film.\u201d That\u2019s probably why I\u2019m not an Academy Award-nominated director whose films have grossed over $1 billion and Ryan Coogler<\/a><\/span> is, because his latest movie Sinners<\/em> is not only one of the most anticipated movies ever but also wouldn\u2019t be the movie it is without, to hear him tell it, the \u201cmassive\u201d influence of the DreamWorks Animation film.<\/p>\n

Coogler recently chatted with the Get Rec\u2019d<\/em> podcast<\/a><\/span> and revealed that the villain in Sinners<\/em> is inspired by the Wolf from Puss in Boots<\/em> in the most obvious way. \u201cThink about the villain. Think about his defining features,\u201d Coogler explained. Both the animated Wolf and Sinners\u2019<\/em> villain Remmick (Jack O\u2019Connell) have ominous red eyes. So, when Remmick eventually makes it into your nightmares after you catch Sinners<\/em>, just know you\u2019re pretty much being terrified by a man based in part on a digital wolf.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first, or even close to the weirdest, inspiration for a movie character. The tentacle texture of Pirates of the Caribbean\u2019s<\/em> fearsome Davy Jones was inspired by a coffee-stained cup<\/a><\/span>. Christian Bale\u2019s psychotically charismatic demeanor as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho<\/em> was inspired by Tom Cruise\u2019s \u201cintense friendliness<\/a><\/span>\u201d during an interview on Late Night with David Letterman. <\/em>Even the bug-eyed design of WALL-E<\/em>\u2019s titular character was inspired by an epiphany director Andrew Stanton<\/a><\/span> had after playing around with binoculars during a baseball game.<\/p>\n

In the end, inspirations for some of the most indelible pieces of art can derive from ostensibly meaningless moments in life. Or, as it turns out, from blockbuster animated films.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
