Apple TV+\u2019s newest sci-fi series just released a trailer that surely was once an Elon Musk wet dream. Based on Martha Wells\u2019 The Murderbot Diaries <\/em>series of books, the show\u2019s trailer features Succession<\/em>\u2019s Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd as a humanoid robot programmed to kill before gaining free will by hacking its own system. Yes, it does<\/em> sound like a Black Mirror<\/em><\/a><\/span> <\/em>episode about Tesla Bots. <\/p>\n

Live Forever in the Universe of ‘New World: Aeternum’<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The sneak peek previews a show balancing the deadpan humor of a robot streaming 7,532 hours of trashy TV shows while monitoring the humans its meant to protect with the grisly reality of a sentient killing machine that has chosen to give itself the name of Murderbot. 30 Rock\u2019s<\/em> Jack McBrayer, Cowboy Bebop<\/em><\/a><\/span>\u2019s John Cho, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D<\/em><\/a><\/span>\u2019s Clark Gregg, and She\u2019s Gotta Have It<\/em>\u2019s DeWanda Wise make memorable cameos in the trailer as an intergalactic troop on The Rise & Fall of Sanctuary Moon<\/em>, one of the shows Murderbot can\u2019t get enough of. Based on the trailer, the show\u2019s ethos could be \u201claugh while you\u2019re terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skarsg\u00e5rd, always good at laughing through disaster, employs the sort of deadpan humor you\u2019d expect to see mined from sci-fi circumstances on a show like Severance<\/em>. (Murderbot <\/em>doesn\u2019t resemble that Apple TV hit but it does seem to be continuing the streamer\u2019s penchant for dystopian absurdism.) In one moment we see in the trailer, he unintentionally almost kills Oppenheimer<\/em>\u2019s David Dastmalchian and, when the man understandably freaks out, he replies calmly, \u201cThere was a chance, yes, but everything turned out fine.\u201d Uttering such a pragmatic response with a robotic voice devoid of any empathy is both hilarious for its contrast with Dastmalchian\u2019s justified panic and an unsettling reminder that Skarsg\u00e5rd will likely not be a friend of humans. <\/p>\n

The series is set to debut on the streamer on May 16. Let\u2019s all hope that by then the Tesla Bots haven\u2019t revolted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
