A lot of people don\u2019t like Electronic Arts\u2014two time winner of The Consumerist<\/em>\u2019s Worst Company in America award<\/a><\/span>\u2014for various reasons.<\/em> But Josef Fares, the director behind the new co-op hit Split Fiction<\/em><\/a><\/span>, says he\u2019s had a great experience working with the publisher, even if nobody believes he\u2019s telling the truth. <\/p>\n

EA is not a fan-favorite video game publisher. Many players have complained about the company\u2019s use of microtransactions<\/a><\/span> and online passes, and how poorly it has handled its ownership of beloved studios like BioWare and Origin<\/a><\/span>, to name just a few problems. Despite all that, Fares says he doesn\u2019t understand all the hate. <\/p>\n

While talking to PC Gamer<\/em> in a recent interview<\/a><\/span>, Fares said that he has a good relationship with EA and likes working with the publisher. And yet, whenever he says that, he told PC Gamer <\/em>that \u201cnobody believes me.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cFor some reason, people like to hate EA, I don\u2019t know why,\u201d said Fares, who became famous online after shouting \u201cFuck the Oscars!\u201d at the 2017 Game Awards<\/a><\/span>. \u201cMy relationship with them is very good. They\u2019re super supportive of us. So I have nothing bad to say about them.\u201d <\/p>\n

Fares further elaborated that in his view, the real problem isn\u2019t with any one publisher, like EA or Ubisoft, but with capitalism itself and how it forces people to be greedy and always looking to make more and more. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem with the whole capitalist idea is that you need to make more and more and more and more money,\u201d explained Fares. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense, because at the end of the day, you will make stupid decisions. But I just hope, in the best of worlds, that you take less of these stupid decisions and focus on what you truly, truly want. And those are the games.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause when you have a great game\u2014we\u2019re seeing it with [Split Fiction<\/em><\/a><\/span>], a game done only from passion, a game where you literally don\u2019t have to buy two copies, a game that doesn\u2019t have any microtransactions. And you see the success it does. I mean, it\u2019s even a financial success, obviously, because people want to pay for something that feels great. So I just hope it inspires other publishers to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fares also told the outlet that EA doesn\u2019t interfere with Hazelight as the studio develops its games, letting it experiment and create whatever it wants. And while he admits EA isn\u2019t perfect, saying that every publisher \u201cfucks up now and then,\u201d it seems at least EA is learning from its mistakes and supporting the creation of games like Split Fiction<\/em><\/a><\/span>. And that\u2019s something. <\/p>\n
