In a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LiamFedus\/status\/1901740085416218672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">statement on X<\/a>, Fedus confirmed the report and added a few additional details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy undergrad was in physics and I\u2019m keen to apply this technology there,\u201d Fedus said in the statement. \u201cBecause AI for science is one of the most strategically important areas to OpenAI and achieving [artificial superintelligence], OpenAI is planning to invest in and partner with my new company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fedus\u2019 firm will compete with Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and others in the nascent AI materials science space. In 2023, DeepMind claimed that its <a href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.google\/discover\/blog\/millions-of-new-materials-discovered-with-deep-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">AI system, Gnome,<\/a> found crystals that could be used to make new materials.
