Are you gripped by the third season of The White Lotus<\/a>? I really am; it\u2019s going to be great. Here are five thoughts I had while watching the first two episodes (don\u2019t worry, no spoilers)\u2026<\/p>\n

1. The iconic opening song has changed, devastating the Internet; this reel made me laugh.<\/p>\n

2. The Ratliff family came to Thailand because their middle child, Piper, is writing her Chapel Hill thesis on Buddhism. Her style is so good, especially that blue floral mini dress from Ciao Lucia<\/a> a few years ago. My friend Lucy said, \u201cThat\u2019s an absurd nightgown,\u201d but I disagree! I kept thinking that she\u2019d be all over D\u00f4en\u2019s spring collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n

(Meanwhile, is Patrick Schwarzenegger, who plays her brother, doing a Tom Cruise impersonation? I can\u2019t unsee it.)<\/p>\n

3. Next, English party girl Chelsea arrives at the hotel with her grumpy older boyfriend, Rick. I love her open-hearted optimism. \u201cChelsea the whole time is like, \u2018You\u2019re so mysterious, Rick. You don\u2019t say anything. I need everything out in the open. I\u2019m an Aries,’\u201d says Aimee Lou Wood, who plays Chelsea, in an Elle interview<\/a>. \u201cAnd actually she\u2019s just as mysterious. So I loved that\u2026 this idea that she\u2019s this strange girl that\u2019s just appeared and nobody really knows where she\u2019s come from, but I think she\u2019s a real survivor.\u201d<\/p>\n

For her swimsuit scenes, Aimee knew<\/a> that she couldn\u2019t show any nerves, even if she felt them: \u201cAs Chelsea, I cannot be thinking about how I look. She does not give a shite<\/em> about how she looks. She is not an insecure person about her body. She\u2019s insecure about other things, about her intelligence and everything, but she\u2019s not insecure about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. Three female friends\u00a0have come to Thailand for a girls\u2019 trip, or \u201cvictory tour,\u201d as one of them says. I find their vibe very stressful \u2014\u00a0they don\u2019t seem to know or really like each other, other than having a shared history. \u201cI remember that there have been times where I\u2019ve been on vacations, and you\u2019d see women friends together, and you were just like, \u2018I can\u2019t really get a vibe of what\u2019s going on?\u2019\u201d creator Mike White told HBO<\/a>. \u201cAnd then one would leave and the other two would start talking. They\u2019re triangulating in some way.\u201d During the second episode, whenever one of the friends would leave a scene, my friend Alison<\/a> would look over at me and immediately mimic, \u201cWell, I will<\/em> say\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Finally, spa manager Belinda, who\u2019s studying wellness in Thailand, is a sweet character but also kind of\u2026 boring? The actress Natasha Rothwell can be absolutely hilarious<\/a>, I wish they would lean into her comedic talents.<\/p>\n

So, have you been watching? Before last week, my boyfriend Freddie<\/a> hadn\u2019t seen a single White Lotus episode (!) but he has valiantly course-corrected by inhaling both the first and second seasons within a few days. Is his head now a scribble of plot twists and red herrings? \u201cI stayed up late, fueled by afternoon and evening coffees,\u201d he told me. \u201cI felt so much anxiety in my chest and had such uneasy feelings.\u201d Well done, Freddie, you understood the assignment.<\/p>\n
