{"id":91125,"date":"2025-02-18T02:15:48","date_gmt":"2025-02-18T02:15:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neclink.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/18\/thousands-protest-elon-musks-doge-in-nyc-on-presidents-day\/"},"modified":"2025-02-18T02:15:48","modified_gmt":"2025-02-18T02:15:48","slug":"thousands-protest-elon-musks-doge-in-nyc-on-presidents-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neclink.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/18\/thousands-protest-elon-musks-doge-in-nyc-on-presidents-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands protest Elon Musk\u2019s DOGE in NYC on Presidents&#8217; Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 10,000 protesters gathered in New York City on Presidents\u2019 Day to speak out against the current Trump administration and the actions in particular of Elon Musk\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/02\/16\/nx-s1-5297117\/50501-movement-presidents-day-protests-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">several protests<\/a> that took place Monday in major cities across the country and came during the same long weekend that smaller protests <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/14\/how-this-weekends-tesla-takeover-protests-against-elon-musk-came-together-on-bluesky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sprouted up at Tesla dealerships<\/a> across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protesters who spoke to TechCrunch from Washington Square Park, raised concerns about DOGE\u2019s access to sensitive data of millions of Americans and the group\u2019s dismantling of federal agencies. They said that they view Musk\u2019s work with DOGE as a veiled attempt at a financial power grab, and expressed frustration that Musk, an unelected official, has gained unprecedented levels of power over the federal government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s extremely dangerous that [Musk] has access to our personal data,\u201d Dmitri, 53, an architect who asked that his last name not be used, told TechCrunch. \u201cHe\u2019s kind of a futurist fanboy who\u2019s basically living in a sci-fi fantasy and trying to implement that, and has the resources to do mass amounts of damage. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/5142311-opm-75000-workers-took-trump-musk-government-buyout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">75,000 workers<\/a> have accepted the Trump administration\u2019s buyout proposal, which in late January offered federal workers eight months pay and benefits to leave their posts if they resigned in early February. DOGE has also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DOGE\/status\/1885420298138247458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">cut 104 government contracts <\/a>related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility programs and dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump also granted Musk\u2019s DOGE team <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/07\/doge-biggest-breach-of-united-states-government-data-under-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">access to the Treasury department\u2019s digital payments<\/a> system, which controls trillions of dollars in payments to Americans, from Social Security benefits to tax refunds, despite questions about their security clearances, their cybersecurity practices, and the legality of Musk\u2019s activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supporters of Trump and Musk applaud their on-paper efforts to root out corruption, inefficiency, and red tape. Opponents object to the way DOGE is going about its stated goals, and warn that the team\u2019s actions will lead to more corruption and <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/01\/senator-warns-of-national-security-risks-after-elon-musks-doge-granted-full-access-to-sensitive-treasury-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national security risks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A wave of<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/11\/federal-workers-sue-elon-musk-and-doge-to-cut-off-data-access\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> legal challenges<\/a> has followed that allege a lack of transparency and <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/07\/coalition-of-us-states-to-file-lawsuit-after-musks-doge-gains-access-to-americans-personal-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data privacy violations.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protesters in New York started at Union Square and marched to Washington Square Park, congregating under the iconic memorial arch dedicated to George Washington, the nation\u2019s first president. This is a coup, plain and simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThis is not about us disagreeing with Republican policies,\u201d said Victoria, bundled up against the cold winds whipping through the city, where though sunny, temperatures hovered around 32 degrees Fahrenheit. \u201cIt\u2019s the fact that Trump has handed over the power of the purse to Elon Musk, who is unelected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As people played music and shouted chants, their homemade signs raised over their heads, a 39-year-old small business owner who identified himself as Corwin said of Musk, \u201che\u2019s so conflicted and it\u2019s so clear that his antiregulatory attitudes benefit him personally and financially.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Musk has targeted several agencies for reduction or dismantling that regulates industries in which his companies operate<strong>. <\/strong>Earlier this month, Musk said he wants to eliminate the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which would regulate X\u2019s planned expansion to financial services, posting on his social network X \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1887979940269666769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CFBP RIP<\/a>,\u201d punctuated with a tombstone emoji.\u00a0 He has stated an intention to go after the Federal Aviation Administration, an agency he\u2019s clashed with before and one that regulates SpaceX. He has also called for<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/12\/13\/the-federal-crash-reporting-rule-tesla-opposes-could-be-on-the-chopping-block\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> ending a rule<\/a> that requires automakers to report crashes when autonomous driving technology is engaged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Musk\u2019s actions at the federal level have affected Tesla\u2019s brand image. During the automaker\u2019s 2024 fourth-quarter earnings, analyst Thomas Monteiro of Investing.com noted that the hype around Tesla is trending downward due to, among other things, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/storyline\/tesla-earnings-live-updates-elon-new-evs-ai-and-more\/page\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">severe brand devaluation<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stories are cropping up of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/tesla-owners-ditching-cars-protest-elon-musk-2031923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">people selling their Teslas<\/a> out of a desire to no longer support Musk\u2019s businesses. Some Cybertruck owners have reported instances of vandalism and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/02\/12\/tesla-cybertrucks-inspire-backlash-amid-elon-musks-political-work\/78358688007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">harassment<\/a>.
