The group wants to buy the nonprofit that controls OpenAI&#8217;s for-profit arm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When asked for comment, an OpenAI spokesperson pointed Engadget to an <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/1889059531625464090\">X post<\/a> from CEO Sam Altman. &#8220;No thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want,&#8221; Altman wrote on the social media platform Musk owns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, OpenAI&#8217;s board of directors officially rejected Musk&#8217;s bid. &#8220;OpenAI is not for sale, and the board has unanimously rejected Mr. Musk&#8217;s latest attempt to disrupt his competition,&#8221; the company said in a response attributed to Bret Taylor, the chair of OpenAI&#8217;s board of directors. &#8220;Any potential reorganization of OpenAI will strengthen our nonprofit and its mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Taylor, incidentally, was the chairman of Twitter&#8217;s board before Musk bought the social media platform for <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/twitter-elon-musk-buyout-offer-decision-185307689.html\">$44 billion in 2022<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"d86648eb26f24774ac6e9ef6b9541a36\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;OpenAI is not for sale, and the board has unanimously rejected Mr. Musk&#8217;s latest attempt to disrupt his competition. OpenAI is not a traditional company, and the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/openais-for-profit-plan-includes-a-public-benefit-corporation-163634265.html\">nonprofit structure<\/a> Sam Altman and others at the company want it to get away from may in fact protect it from Musk&#8217;s offer.
