We usually focus on locking windows and doors or installing a security system, but fire is a major danger that can strike faster than you\u2019d ever imagine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Every year, most fire-related deaths in North America happen at home, and you may have as little as two to three minutes to escape safely after the smoke alarm sounds. We\u2019re partnering with the NFPA to share essential tips on protecting your home from the devastation of fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Never_Cook_and_Run\"\/><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>1. Never Cook and Run<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Cooking fires are the number one cause of fires and injuries in the home, and most cooking fires involve the kitchen stove.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And if you get easily distracted like I do, then here\u2019s a little wake-up call: <strong>unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> I must admit that I\u2019m guilty of this one. Does this sound familiar? You\u2019re cooking up something for dinner and then run out of the kitchen to do something that is probably not that important. What was only supposed to take a few seconds turns into minutes, and then you come back to the kitchen only to find that what was cooking now boiled over or burned. Luckily no fires. This time! To keep it safe, always stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling. If you do have to leave the kitchen, to keep it safe just turn off the stove. And if you\u2019re simmering, baking, or roasting food, be sure to check it regularly. Keep Your Cooking Space Clean and Organized<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sometimes when we\u2019re not paying attention, things in our cooking space can easily catch fire. Things like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, paper towels or napkins should be kept a safe distance away from the stove-top. I find when I cook in a more organized way and clean as I go, I\u2019m a lot less likely to let these types of things get near my stove top.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Be_Prepared_In_Case_You_Do_Have_A_Cooking_Fire\"\/><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>3. Be Prepared In Case You Do Have A Cooking Fire <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sometimes even when we think we\u2019re being safe things can happen. So, for a little extra precaution while you\u2019re cooking, keep a lid nearby that fits properly on the pot or pan you\u2019re using.\u00a0If a small fire does start, use the lid to smother the flames and then turn off the burner. Keep the pan covered until you know the fire has subsided and the pan or pot has completely cooled down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5930\" src=\"https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire-Prevention.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire-Prevention.jpg 750w, https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire-Prevention-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire-Prevention-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire-Prevention-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If there\u2019s an oven fire instead, quickly turn the heat off and keep the door closed. If at any time you feel like the fire is too much for you to handle, get out of the house, close the door behind you to help contain the fire and call 9-1-1 or your local fire department from outside your home. Don\u2019t go back in and let the professionals handle it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Always_Handle_Candles_With_Care\"\/><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>4. Always Handle Candles With Care<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Let\u2019s face it: nothing sets the mood like candlelight. They create such a relaxing and Zen atmosphere and they can smell so darn good. But as beautiful as they are, candles can be a major cause of home fires and, even scarier, home fire deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">According to the NFPA, from 2011-2015, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 8,690 home structure fires that were started by candles. More than one-third (37%) of those home candle fires were started in the bedroom and three of every five candle fires started when they were left too close to flammable objects like furniture, mattresses or bedding, curtains, or decorations. In 16% of those fires, the candles were unattended or abandoned. And it\u2019s probably no surprise but Christmas, New Year\u2019s Day and New Year\u2019s Eve have the highest number of candle fire incidents than any other days of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5922\" src=\"https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire_Prevention-Candle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"726\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire_Prevention-Candle.jpg 750w, https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire_Prevention-Candle-150x145.jpg 150w, https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire_Prevention-Candle-300x290.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>If you love candles as much as I do, there are a few things you can do to continue to enjoy them safely.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Never leave candles unattended and blow them all out when you decide to leave the room or go to bed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Keep candles at least 1 foot (30 centimeters) away from anything that can burn, including decorations or greenery.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Always place candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface and use candle holders that won\u2019t tip over easily.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Light candles carefully, keeping hair, sleeves and loose clothing clear of the flame.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5923\" src=\"https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire-Prevention_Candles.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"1027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire-Prevention_Candles.jpg 750w, https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire-Prevention_Candles-150x205.jpg 150w, https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire-Prevention_Candles-219x300.jpg 219w, https:\/\/onbetterliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fire-Prevention_Candles-748x1024.jpg 748w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\"\/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Trim long candle wicks down to about \u00bc of an inch to keep flames manageable. And be sure to extinguish the flame before it gets too close to the holder or container. You can use the candle holder\u2019s lid to smother the flame gently rather than blowing out the flame<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage. Never use candles.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Make_Sure_Your_Smoke_Alarms_Are_In_Working_Order\"\/><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>5. Make Sure Your Smoke Alarms Are In Working Order<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When was the last time you tested your <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4hlknmH\" class=\"external\"><strong>smoke alarms<\/strong><\/a>? Can\u2019t remember? It might be time. The smoke alarms in your home should be cleaned of dust and tested every month. If they\u2019re not working properly, immediately change the batteries or replace the unit if needed.
