On Monday, Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, one of Canada\u2019s most populous provinces, announced on X <\/a>that the province\u2019s government would be \u201cripping up\u201d its $68 million ($100 million CAD) contract with Elon Musk\u2019s Starlink satellite internet service. The news came soon after President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff<\/a> on nearly all Canadian imported goods, causing Canada to impose a 25% tariff<\/a> on U.S. goods in response. <\/p>\n But Ford reportedly decided to put a pin in that plan later on Monday after President Trump chose to delay imposing tariffs on all Canadian imports for 30 days. The stay came after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada announced several concessions, including plans to station 10,000 \u201cfrontline personnel\u201d at the 5,500-mile-long Canada-U.S. border.<\/p>\n Musk has become a close confidant of President Trump, and now oversees the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, a team within the Trump administration tasked with conducting massive cost-cutting to government spending<\/a> and widescale deregulation. At the same time, Musk\u2019s Starlink has been looking to strike deals<\/a> with local and national governments to provide satellite internet. The Ontario government\u2019s Starlink contract was signed in November 2024 and is supposed to provide fast internet to remote parts of the province.\u00a0<\/p>\n Earlier on Monday \u2014 before Canada was able to delay the imposition of those U.S. tariffs \u2014 Ford also said in a press conference that other U.S. companies will also be banned from future provincial contracts<\/a> in Ontario until the U.S. government removes the tariffs. Ford said Musk was \u201cpart of the Trump team that wants to destroy families, incomes, destroy businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201c[Musk] wants to take food off the table of people, hard-working people, and I\u2019m not going to tolerate it,\u201d said Ford. <\/p>\n \u201cU.S.-based businesses will now lose out on tens of billions of dollars in new revenues.
