Emma Copley Eisenberg<\/a>, who wrote the bestselling novel Housemates<\/a> and runs the newsletter Frump Feelings<\/a>, lives in Philly with her partner, Art, and their cats, Tofu, Sesame, and Gabriel. Here, Emma talks about soft robes, size-inclusive vintage stores, and not being an \u201cironing girlie\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year, leading up to my book tour for Housemates<\/a><\/em>, I booked a session with Dacy Gillespie<\/a>, a weight-inclusive personal stylist. I was definitely programmed from a young age to ask of clothing, \u2018Does it flatter my figure?\u2019 by which we mean minimize. I always thought I couldn\u2019t wear turtlenecks because I have big boobs. Dacy was like, \u2018Who cares? Do you like this turtleneck?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I\u2019ve grown more comfortable in my body and felt more desirable, I\u2019ve become more attentive to style. Witnessing how much joy my partner, Art, takes in style has also inspired me. They\u2019ll search far and wide for the exact right piece, and they have a lot of fun putting outfits together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor my book tour, I saved up for a few fun, pricier pieces \u2014\u00a0I wanted to celebrate the hard work and isolation of writing a book \u2014 and this dress was one of them. It\u2019s so comfortable, like wearing a caftan. And this is a hat I am knitting for a friend; I love neon. I\u2019ve been knitting since I was eight, when my mom taught me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a sense that if you\u2019re fat, wearing bright colors will draw unwanted attention. And it\u2019s true that I do get remarks on this dress, but that\u2019s because it\u2019s a dress that brings people joy. I like being a part of that experience, even if it means I\u2019m getting a bit more attention for what I\u2019m wearing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis December, my mom said, \u2018Merry Christmas, here\u2019s a tote from the Paris Review!\u2019 I was a little confused until I saw that the image is a piece by my grandfather, an artist. He died when I was eight, but my most salient memory was visiting him in Key West. I can still see him sitting on his tiny boat, wearing a captain\u2019s hat and drinking an extremely strong vodka martini.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not an ironing girlie. But both Wray<\/a> and Universal Standard<\/a> make clothes that are easy to pack and throw on right out of a suitcase.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up doing lots of thrifting, but then my body changed and I sized out of most vintage stores; I was bummed. I\u2019d go shopping with friends but look at only the accessories. In New Haven, I stumbled upon Witch Bitch Thrift<\/a>, which is size inclusive. Going shopping there felt like a life-changing experience \u2014\u00a0they put so much work into measuring each piece and translating that into today\u2019s sizing. My friend Emma Specter<\/a> also recommended Proud Mary<\/a> in L.A.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Emma<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are quotes that say something like, \u2018no great literature was written by someone in their pajamas.\u2019 Meanwhile, I\u2019m writing in a caftan<\/a> and very fluffy robe<\/a>. (I\u2019m very into robes, and this particular one<\/a> is incredible.) But if it\u2019s a day where I\u2019m teaching or doing stuff out in the world, I do get dressed.\u201d<\/p>\n
