Normally, a story like that wouldn\u2019t get much attention in the tech press. But the piece opened with an anecdote about Mark Zuckerberg that immediately raised eyebrows.<\/p>\n<p>The story detailed a recent meeting Miller had with Zuckerberg when the Meta CEO traveled to Mar-a-Lago last year. According to <em>The Times<\/em>, Zuckerberg \u2014 who would soon renounce Meta\u2019s prior <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/social-media\/meta-is-ditching-third-party-fact-checkers-on-facebook-instagram-142330246.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:fact checking;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">fact checking<\/a> efforts and ditch <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/metas-right-wing-reinvention-also-includes-an-end-to-dei-programs-and-trans-messenger-themes-204031848.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:corporate diversity;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">corporate diversity<\/a> programs \u2014 \u201cblamed his former chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, for an inclusivity initiative at Facebook that encouraged employees\u2019 self-expression in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That line set off a fresh round of speculation (and some outrage) in tech circles. Sandberg, who left Meta <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/sheryl-sandberg-stepping-down-facebook-meta-194624091.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:in 2022;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">in 2022<\/a> and rose to fame after authoring her women in the workplace manifesto <em>Lean In<\/em>, was known for her once close partnership with Zuckerberg at the top of Facebook. That Zuckerberg would blame his former top lieutenant for fostering \u201cinclusivity\u201d at his company, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/zuckerberg-threw-sheryl-sandberg-under-the-bus-during-his-meeting-with-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:raised eyebrows;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">raised eyebrows<\/a> even among longtime observers of the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe always knew who Mark Zuckerberg and covered for him,\u201d <em>New York Times<\/em> reporter Sheera Frankel, who co-wrote a book about Facebook\u2019s dominance, observed <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/sheeraf.bsky.social\/post\/3lfv6ng22es2a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:on Bluesky;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">on Bluesky<\/a>. \u201c The question is whether she will continue to do so when he so blatantly throws her under the (Trump) bus.\u201d Journalist and longtime tech pundit Kara Swisher likewise <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@karaswisher\/post\/DE6LV11N2gm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:noted;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">noted<\/a> that \u201cfolks I talked to tonight from the Mark\/Sheryl Facebook era are shocked but not surprised by his blaming her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I also weighed in on my <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@karissabe\/post\/DE5qYgFTS1S\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Threads account;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Threads account<\/a>, sharing a link to a <em>Business Insider<\/em> <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:9;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/mark-zuckerberg-sheryl-sandberg-meta-facebook-like-a-parent-2024-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:story;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:9;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">story<\/a> from February that quoted an interview in which Zuckerberg said that Sandberg had raised him \u201clike a parent.\u201d I joked that the comment hadn\u2019t aged well.<\/p>\n<p>But on Friday, Zuckerberg decided to let me (and I guess everyone else) know that he and Sandberg are still cool, after all. \u201cSheryl did amazing work at Meta and will forever be a legend in the industry,\u201d he wrote in <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:10;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@zuck\/post\/DE8CZDKSPkw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a reply;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:10;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">a reply<\/a> to my post. \u201cShe built one of the greatest businesses of all time and taught me much of what I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 615px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:64%\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview has-width\" alt=\"Still besties.\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/zuC8VzwQR2Juwi3VrshGlw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTYxNQ--\/https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/os\/creatr-uploaded-images\/2025-01\/c4a2e640-d51e-11ef-bfff-54deb99b1c1d\" height=\"615\" width=\"960\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Still besties.\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/zuC8VzwQR2Juwi3VrshGlw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTYxNQ--\/https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/os\/creatr-uploaded-images\/2025-01\/c4a2e640-d51e-11ef-bfff-54deb99b1c1d\" height=\"615\" width=\"960\" class=\"caas-img has-width\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\"><span class=\"caption-credit\"> Threads<\/span><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A few minutes later, Sandberg <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:11;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@sherylsandberg\/post\/DE8GHndSWq4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:jumped in;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:11;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">jumped in<\/a> to helpfully let me know there are no hard feelings on her side, either. \u201cThank you, @zuck. I will always be grateful for the many years we spent building a great business together &#8211; and for your friendship that got me through some of the hardest times of my life and continues to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg responded with a <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:12;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@zuck\/post\/DE8GvLBThA-\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:single heart emoji;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:12;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">single heart emoji<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I asked Zuckerberg if he felt Sandberg was too focused on DEI initiatives at Meta, or whether she took away from the \u201cmasculine energy\u201d he recently <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/mark-zuckerberg-joe-rogan-masculine-feminine-energy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told Joe Rogan;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">told Joe Rogan<\/a> corporations should embody. Notably, he has not denied <em>The Times\u2019 <\/em>reporting about his comments regarding Sandberg, though he claimed they are being misconstrued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I answered a question about where the phrase &#8216;bring your whole self to work&#8217; came from, and now there&#8217;s a whole bogus narrative saying I blamed Sheryl for a bunch of stuff that I never did and never will,&#8221; he <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@zuck\/post\/DE8eW6KyTyr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">said<\/a>. (Bringing your &#8220;whole self&#8221; to work is a slogan popularized by Sandberg in <em>Lean In<\/em>. Similar language often appeared on <a data-i13n=\"cpos:15;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metacareers.com\/blog\/its-her-self-bringing-your-authentic-self-to-work\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Meta's careers site;cpos:15;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Meta&#8217;s careers site<\/a> when the company highlighted diversity among its employees. &#8220;Being your authentic self is the foundation of who we are as a company,&#8221; Meta wrote on a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:16;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240405145626\/https:\/\/www.metacareers.com\/diversity-report\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:since-deleted;cpos:16;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">since-deleted<\/a> page of its corporate website where it shared its internal diversity reports.)<\/p>\n<p>So, I guess that settles it. Nothing to see here, folks. Mark and Sheryl are definitely still friends. They may not work at the same company anymore, but they are still able to come together to head off a potential<a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:17;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/mark-zuckerberg-blamed-sheryl-sandberg-meta-inclusivity-push-report\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:PR crisis;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:17;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"> PR crisis<\/a>.
