I don\u2019t know exactly how it\u2019s done, but my aunts and uncles execute it flawlessly. The atmosphere ends up being fun and wonderful and boisterous, but the catch? Sometimes you find yourself craving a little quiet time.<\/p>\n

So, I\u2019ve realized that the secret to surviving, even thriving, during family gatherings is stealing away, here and there, to be alone. Here\u2019s how I\u2019ve done that\u2026<\/p>\n

* Run an errand, any errand.<\/strong> Fill up the car with gas. Get wine for dinner or milk for tomorrow\u2019s breakfast. Grab grandma\u2019s sweater from the other house. Whatever needs doing, do it.<\/p>\n

* Go for a walk.<\/strong> Even just looping the block for 20 minutes while listening to a podcast \u2014\u00a0here are six funny ones<\/a> \u2014\u00a0can be immensely restorative.<\/p>\n

* Take one kid on an adventure.<\/strong> You can still get that feeling of quiet time with just one kid, I\u2019ve found. I\u2019ll take Anton to throw darts at the pub\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026and Toby never turns down an ice cream (or hot chocolate) excursion.<\/p>\n

\"family<\/p>\n

* Walk people\u2019s dogs<\/strong> to give them a break\u2026<\/p>\n

\"family<\/p>\n

* or their babies.<\/strong> When I\u2019ve volunteered to take babies for walks, their exhausted parents always say yes.<\/p>\n

\"family<\/p>\n

* Read together in a quiet spot.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"family<\/p>\n

* And if all else fails? Just close your eyes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"family<\/p>\n

Then you\u2019ll be ready to return to the happy chaos. xo<\/p>\n
