One month after Las Vegas lost the Tropicana, another institution was demolished that locals and tourists didn\u2019t talk about as much. Denis Hof\u2019s Love Ranch \u2014 located 80 miles outside Sin City in Nevada\u2019s Nye County, where prostitution is legal \u2014 was knocked down, with no fireworks or drone show, last week.<\/p>\n

Prostitution is legal in 10 of Nevada\u2019s 17 counties \u2014 though not the ones that contain Las Vegas and Reno<\/a> \u2014 and then only in licensed brothels.<\/p>\n

In 2010, Hof \u2014 already America\u2019s best known brothel owner thanks to HBO\u2019s \u201cCathouse\u201d series, filmed at his Moonlite Bunny Ranch near Reno \u2014 purchased the brothel that he named his Love Ranch from Maynard \u201cJoe\u201d Richards, former owner of the Pahrump Valley Times<\/em> newspaper.<\/p>\n

Located on 75 acres in the desert town of Crystal, the Love Ranch consisted of a series of doublewide trailers connected to become 15 one-bedroom suites, all painted pink. There was also a bar, two kitchens and a VIP room.<\/p>\n

The Love Ranch offered a menu of service options 24 hours a day. These included \u201coil wrestling,\u201d \u201cthe girlfriend experience\u201d and \u201cViagra and vibrators.\u201d<\/p>\n

As in all legal Nevada brothels, the prostitutes \u2014 who worked as licensed independent contractors \u2014 split their revenue evenly with the house.<\/p>\n

The VIP room is where former NBA star Lamar Odom overdosed on cocaine and herbal Viagra in October 2015.<\/p>\n

At the time, he was married to Khloe Kardashian, thus ensuring that the incident, and the Love Ranch name, got plastered on tabloid covers for months.<\/p>\n

Odom denied taking any drugs, by the way. He claimed that Hof tried to kill him. If indeed that was true, then Hof nearly succeeded. While recuperating at Las Vegas\u2019 Sunrise Hospital, Odom suffered 12 strokes and six heart attacks.<\/p>\n

County officials shut the brothel down in February 2018 for unapproved structural changes, fire code violations and late license renewal payments. It reopened six months later, following a court ruling by Judge Richard Boulware.<\/p>\n

On October 16, 2018, after a night of celebrating his 72nd\u00a0birthday at the ranch, Hof was found dead in the same bedroom that Odom had overdosed in. His body was discovered by former porn star Ron Jeremy. Hof was determined to have died of natural causes.<\/p>\n

Strangely, being dead didn\u2019t stop Hof from winning a seat in the Nevada Assembly a few weeks later.<\/p>\n

It was his second campaign \u2014 he lost the first one \u2014 and he won it in a landslide, having branded himself the \u201cTrump from Pahrump.\u201d (Commissioners from Nye, Lincoln and Clark counties voted to elect Gregory Halen II as Hof\u2019s replacement.)<\/p>\n

Love Lost<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Love Ranch was permanently closed soon after Hof\u2019s death and was listed for sale for $1.2 million in June 2019. It was purchased for an undisclosed amount in late 2022, by Dallas resident Jan Jensen, which explains why it was knocked down instead of reopened as another brothel.<\/p>\n

Jensen is an outspoken opponent of the brothel industry who founded the Jensen Project, a nonprofit dedicated to ending sexual violence and helping its survivors.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wanted it all crushed because she didn\u2019t want anyone to have any knowledge that it was ever here,\u201d the Love Ranch\u2019s former shift manager told the Pahrump Valley Times.<\/em><\/p>\n
