The declaration stands in stark contrast to the AI training policies of X (Twitter) and Meta\u2019s Threads. Probably not coincidentally, Bluesky\u2019s announcement came the same day <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/social-media\/x-updates-its-privacy-policy-to-allow-third-parties-to-train-ai-models-with-its-data-234207599.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:X\u2019s new terms of service;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">X\u2019s new terms of service<\/a>, allowing third-party partners to train on user posts, went into effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA number of artists and creators have made their home on Bluesky, and we hear their concerns with other platforms training on their data,\u201d Bluesky <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/bsky.app\/post\/3layuzbto2c2x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:posted;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">posted<\/a> (<a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/11\/15\/24297442\/bluesky-no-intention-train-generative-ai-posts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:via;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">via<\/a> <em>The Verge<\/em>) on Friday. \u201cWe do not use any of your content to train generative AI, and have no intention of doing so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a follow-up post, the decentralized social platform <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/bsky.app\/post\/3layuzbtpys2x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:clarified;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">clarified<\/a> that it does use AI to help with content moderation. \u201cBluesky uses AI internally to assist in content moderation, which helps us triage posts and shield human moderators from harmful content,\u201d the company posted. Bluesky also added that it uses AI in the algorithms powering its Discover feed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of these are Gen AI systems trained on user content,\u201d Bluesky stressed.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Verge<\/em> points out that Bluesky\u2019s robots.txt (the policy that dictates what outside parties can scrape from a website) doesn\u2019t prevent <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/how-openais-chatgpt-has-changed-the-world-in-just-a-year-140050053.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:OpenAI;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">OpenAI<\/a>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/mobile\/smartphones\/google-now-offers-a-standalone-gemini-app-on-iphone-160025513.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Google;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Google<\/a> or other leading GenAI companies from crawling its data. The company justified that potential hole by pointing to the platform\u2019s open and public nature. \u201cJust as robots.txt files don\u2019t always prevent outside companies from crawling those sites, the same applies here,\u201d spokesperson Emily Liu told <em>The Verge<\/em>. \u201cThat said, we\u2019d like to do our part to ensure that outside orgs respect user consent and are actively discussing within the team on how to achieve this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Bluesky is still the underdog in a race with X and Threads, the platform has <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/social-media\/bluesky-surges-to-15-million-users-after-getting-a-million-sign-ups-in-one-week-224213573.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:picked up steam;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">picked up steam<\/a> after the US election. It passed the 15 million user threshold on Wednesday after adding more than a million in the past week.<\/p>\n<p>A <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:10;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/insights\/social-media-news\/x-traffic-peak-deactivations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:report;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:10;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">report<\/a> from web analytics company SimilarWeb noted that the signup surge coincided with a spike in X deactivations.
