{"id":87050,"date":"2024-11-11T23:35:15","date_gmt":"2024-11-11T23:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neclink.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/11\/airlines-suspend-flights-as-spirit-plane-hit-by-gunfire\/"},"modified":"2024-11-11T23:35:15","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T23:35:15","slug":"airlines-suspend-flights-as-spirit-plane-hit-by-gunfire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neclink.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/11\/airlines-suspend-flights-as-spirit-plane-hit-by-gunfire\/","title":{"rendered":"Airlines suspend flights as Spirit plane hit by gunfire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Several airlines have suspended flights to Haiti after a passenger plane from the US was hit by gunfire as it tried to land in Port-au-Prince.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Spirit Airlines Flight 951 from Fort Lauderdale in Florida was diverted to the neighbouring Dominican Republic where it landed safely at Santiago Airport.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A flight attendant suffered minor injuries, the airline said in a statement, adding that no passengers were hurt.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It is the second time in three weeks that aircraft have been shot at over the Haitian capital.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Haiti is in the grip of a deep political crisis with armed gangs controlling large parts of the country. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">On Monday, a new prime minister was installed by the country&#8217;s ruling council <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4gx7gjv22po\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">after the previous leader, Garry Conille<!-- --><\/a>, was ousted less than six months into the job.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Spirit Airlines flight had been scheduled to land at Toussaint Louverture International Airport on Monday just before 12:00 local time (17:00 GMT) when it was hit.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Unverified video of the incident shared on social media appeared to show several bullet holes on the inside of the aircraft, where the crew sit during take-off and landing.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Spirit Airlines said that damage &#8220;consistent with gunfire&#8221; was found when the plane was inspected at Santiago Airport. The aicraft was taken out of commission, Spirit added.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The airline said it had also suspended flights to Haiti &#8220;pending further evaluation&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Two other US airlines, American Airlines and JetBlue, have also suspended flights to Haiti until at least Thursday.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The security situation has further deteriorated in Haiti in recent months.
