<\/a><\/div>\nWe all need some comic relief right now, so let\u2019s talk bad hair days. Here\u2019s mine.<\/p>\n One of my best friends is getting married in New York \u2014\u00a0black tie! \u2014\u00a0and I want to treat myself to a blowout. I\u2019m staying at my aunt\u2019s apartment, and the nearest Drybar is one block over. I note the low stars on Google but book an appointment anyway. \u201cDon\u2019t worry, it\u2019s like McDonald\u2019s!\u201d I reassure my friends. \u201cYou pick what you want from a menu, and it\u2019s always the same.\u201d <\/p>\n I am a sorceress of self-delusion.<\/p>\n So what if the bathroom is dirty and the entire staff seems deeply unhappy to be there? From the smudged menu, I pick the \u201cCosmo-Tai\u201d \u2014\u00a0a tousled wavy \u2018do that makes you look like an extra in a teen drama (perfect) \u2014 and take off my glasses.<\/p>\n The Cosmo-Tai model photos from Drybar<\/em><\/p>\n The stylist washes my hair, and the water is ice cold. \u201cThey\u2019re saving money on energy costs! That\u2019s so great!<\/em>\u201d I tell myself. She torches my hair at the roots with the dryer, blasting my scalp with the fires of hell. \u201cCozy<\/em>!\u201d I think. <\/p>\n The curling iron comes out, and I relax and close my eyes. Then I feel my stylist sigh at every curl. Soul-searching sighs. Sighs of grief, exhaustion, malaise. I know that doing my hair isn\u2019t going to bring her any happiness today, and frankly, it shouldn\u2019t. A colleague passes by and asks, \u201cWhen you get off?\u201d and they exchange a brief conversation on the theme of: I want this to be over. <\/p>\n We all know this feeling.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have such fine hair,\u201d she sighs. \u201cI did it extra curly so it\u2019ll stay for the wedding.\u201d She twirls the chair around so I can see. Glasses go on.<\/p>\n In the mirror, a museum-worthy piece of abstract art. Asymmetrical curls, so tightly wound that if you pull them they spring back with a cartoon boing<\/em>! Others a little cramped, like they got caught in a car door. Frizz exploding from a wonky center part that suggests I may have stuck my fingers in the socket to take the edge off. I ask, meekly, \u201cMaybe we tease it out\u2026 a bit?\u201d <\/p>\n I tip 20% and rush outta there, taking a quick selfie in the elevator up to my aunt\u2019s apartment. \u201cSo, that\u2019s a blowout?\u201d she inquires from behind an iPad game of Rummikub. \u201cAre you\u2026 gonna cry?\u201d my life partner asks, worried.<\/p>\n No! I actually feel giddy. A hairdo so bad it\u2019s hilarious. I wet my hands at the sink and try to tame the beast. Boing<\/em>! The curls spring back. I consider a shower and then reconsider because of not caring that much.
