(Image: David Held)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At 5:30 p.m., a passenger train departed Boulder City (home of the Hoover Dam) with a couple dozen exuberant railway aficionados, Nevada State Railroad Museum volunteers, Henderson City Council members and assorted other dignitaries.<\/p>\n<p>It became the first passenger train from Boulder City ever to travel far enough into Henderson to see the Las Vegas Strip. And that\u2019s because the last passenger train to do so ran in 1935, before the Strip existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment,\u201d museum director Christopher MacMahon told <em>Casino.org.<\/em> \u201cThis is something we\u2019ve been trying to do since the museum was founded in 1989, and it helps us build a better museum for people to come and experience the history of our wonderful state.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Boulder Dash<\/h2>\n<p>The Boulder City Line is a 22-mile rail spur opened in 1931 by the Union Pacific Railroad for trains to transport workers, concrete and heavy machinery to the Hoover Dam construction site. (Image: UNLV Special Collections)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Passenger service on the spur ceased once dam construction was complete, and freight service stopped after the last generator was delivered in 1961. (In 1962, the final four miles of track leading into the dam were removed and scrapped. (Image: UNLV Special Collections)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the museum\u2019s trains arrived three years too late to make the trip into the heart of Henderson. That\u2019s because the tracks were paved over to widen a street \u2014 ironically named <em>Railroad Pass Road<\/em> \u2014 in 1998. (It happens to be the location of the Railroad Pass Casino, Nevada\u2019s oldest continuously operating gambling establishment.)<\/p>\n<p>When Interstate 11 was built in 2018, it included a railroad bridge that reconnected the two severed ends of the railroad spur.<\/p>\n<p>After years of red tape and negotiations, and then waiting out the pandemic, Thursday evening\u2019s train was finally able to make the first trip across that bridge.<\/p>\n<p>The crew got out and celebrated once they reached Paradise Hills Drive.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s only a mile or so farther into Henderson than the train used to run, but it\u2019s far enough to see the lights of the entire Las Vegas Strip twinkle 25 miles in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been our goal for a long time,\u201d MacMahon said. \u201cIt\u2019s a long time in the making.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_333108\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-333108\" data-style=\"width: 1095px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-333108 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/train-crew-main-858x580.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1095\" height=\"740\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/train-crew-main-858x580.jpg 858w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/train-crew-main-430x290.jpg 430w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/train-crew-main.jpg 1350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1095px) 100vw, 1095px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-333108\" class=\"text-description\">The crew of Union Pacific 844 celebrates reaching Paradise Hills Drive in Henderson. (Image: Jennifer MacMahon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The extra mile makes the round trip, at 20-25 mph, about 45 minutes in total. And that\u2019s finally long enough for the museum to start thinking about dinner excursions, like most other US train museums offer. (Image: Jennifer MacMahon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Sites Trained<\/h2>\n<p>MacMahon he says he hopes the museum\u2019s trains will one day make even it farther up the line\u00a0 \u2014 perhaps as far as Russell Road in Las Vegas, where the spur begins. The tracks are all still there, they\u2019re just all currently in use by Union Pacific freight trains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would create a lot of regulatory issues,\u201d MacMahon said. \u201cWe\u2019d have to get the City of Henderson and Union Pacific interested in having talks, and we\u2019d need approval from the Federal Railroad Administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not to say we can\u2019t go further in the future, but this is the point where we\u2019ll be for a while, and we\u2019re happy to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Nevada State Railroad Museum, at 601 Yucca St. in Boulder City, offers train rides to the public on Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m., 12 noon and 2 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for children 4-11, and free for children 3 and younger.<\/p>\n<p>For info, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boulderrailroadmuseum.org\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/passenger-rail-service-expands-on-las-vegas-hoover-dam-line\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted on: October 11, 2024, 05:54h.\u00a0 Last updated on: October 11, 2024, 06:45h.
