The good news is \u2014 fall is here, and TV is finally back!<\/p>\n

But the bad news is that a terrible brain parasite seems to have infected the network execs in charge of scheduling this year\u2019s new shows.<\/p>\n

Okay, that might be a little harsh, but something weird<\/em> is going on here, and we intend to get to the bottom of it!<\/p>\n

The trouble started last week when the pilot episode of The Penguin<\/a> completely knocked our socks off.<\/p>\n

(Sorry for the poor choice of words. The less said about the scene where Colin Farrel removes his socks, the better.)<\/p>\n

Now, as a TV site that seeks to promote discussion \u2014 and as fans who love to see a show flourish via word of mouth \u2014 we\u2019re generally opposed to the Netflix<\/a>\/Hulu habit of releasing entire seasons all at once.<\/p>\n

That said, we were more than a little dismayed to see that we would have to wait a full ten days<\/em> for the second episode of The Penguin.<\/p>\n

And the situation is even worse with Kathy Bates\u2019 Matlock<\/a> reboot\/reimagining\/re-whatever.<\/p>\n

CBS released the show\u2019s premiere episode last night, to considerable critical acclaim.<\/p>\n

But if you\u2019re one of the millions who can\u2019t wait to see what further adventures await Ms. Bates\u2019 plucky attorney \u2014 well, we\u2019re afraid we have some bad news \u2026<\/p>\n

The second episode of Matlock won\u2019t air until October 17. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s more than three weeks from today. <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a fun little experiment for our readers in the Northern Hemisphere. Look at the nearest tree. Now take a vivid mental picture of it. Nice and lush and green, yeah? <\/p>\n

By the time Matty Matlock once again graces your screen, those leaves will be brown and on the ground.<\/p>\n

And don\u2019t pull any funny business by looking at a palm tree or a pine. This isn\u2019t a botany class!<\/p>\n

We\u2019re just making the point that 25 days is way<\/em> too long a wait between a show\u2019s first and second episodes.<\/p>\n

We might be sounding like Abraham Simpson<\/a>, shaking our fists at the sky and bellowing for more Matlock. But seriously, what the hell is happening here?<\/p>\n

The technical answer to that question is this:<\/p>\n

Last night\u2019s episode was a \u201csneak preview\u201d and an \u201cencore presentation\u201d of the Matlock pilot <\/a>will air the week before the second episode.<\/p>\n

But all that PR-lingo justification doesn\u2019t make this decision any less baffling.<\/p>\n

So people who watched and enjoyed the Matlock \u201csneak preview\u201d will now be expected to either remember the events of that episode for a whole month or to rewatch the pilot ahead of episode two?!<\/p>\n

Needless to say, that\u2019s a little bonkers.<\/p>\n

And while the wait for more Penguin isn\u2019t nearly as long, it might prove just as problematic.<\/p>\n

This is a show that will likely take the 10-hour movie approach <\/a>to televisual storytelling.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s fine, of course. But most shows that go the hyper-serialized route (like FX and Hulu\u2019s The Bear<\/a>) drop all of their episodes at once.<\/p>\n

And they certainly don\u2019t take week-and-a-half breaks to enable the audience to forget all those important plot details.<\/p>\n

In case you missed the fantastic pilot, The Penguin is not your usual superhero franchise piece<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s twisty, noirish mob drama, with nary a mention of the Caped Crusader in its opening hour.<\/p>\n

As for Matlock, its pilot episode featured a third-act twist that likely left most viewers stunned.<\/p>\n

It was the kind of ending that was perfect for building anticipation for the next episode \u2014 which you\u2019ll be able to watch sometime next quarter.<\/p>\n

Hey, maybe the marketing gurus know something we don\u2019t. Maybe giving these shows extra time to build word of mouth is a stroke of programming genius.<\/p>\n

But frankly, we hope that\u2019s not the case. Because we\u2019d hate to see this sort of scheduling become an industry-wide trend.<\/p>\n
