<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\nIt\u2019s easy to figure out what\u2019s behind the hatred Green Day\u2019s Billie Joe Armstrong expressed for Las Vegas on Friday night when you consider where he said it. The singer was standing on a stage erected in a San Francisco baseball stadium. It was Oracle Park, not the Oakland Coliseum, but you get the idea.<\/p>\n Armstrong grew up worshipping the Oakland A\u2019s and, like millions of the team\u2019s fans, is enraged that billionaire owner John Fisher has decided to thumb his nose at the ballclub\u2019s 56-year history in the East Bay just to build a cheaper new stadium on the Las Vegas Strip. (OK, so maybe it\u2019s more like the team\u2019s tens of thousands<\/em> of fans, judging from lackluster attendance figures in recent years.)<\/p>\n \u201cWe don\u2019t take shit from people like fucking John Fisher,\u201d the \u201cDookie\u201d singer huffed as the sold-out crowd of 42,000 roared its approval. \u201cI hate Las Vegas! It\u2019s the worst shithole in America!\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, what happens in San Francisco doesn\u2019t stay in San Francisco anymore \u2014 not since the advent of social media.<\/p>\n The band\u2019s current \u201cSaviors\u201d tour includes no stops in Las Vegas, and it is wise not to add any while the memory of Armstrong\u2019s tirade remains fresh.<\/p>\n Things haven\u2019t always gone so great for Green Day in Sin City.<\/p>\n On Sept. 21, 2012, during the pop-oriented iHeartRadio Music Festival, Armstrong halted his band\u2019s 1994 hit \u201cBasket Case\u201d to throw a conniption fit. He smashed his guitar and stormed off stage early when confronted with a blinking sign warning him that Green Day\u2019s allotted time was drawing to a close.<\/p>\n \u201cFuck this shit!\u201d Armstrong screamed. \u201cI\u2019ve been around since 19-fucking-88. And you\u2019re gonna give me one fucking minute? I\u2019m not fucking Justin Bieber, you motherfuckers. You gotta be fuckin\u2019 joking!\u201d<\/p>\n The band issued a statement apologizing for that incident and, not uncoincidentally, Armstrong entered a rehab facility shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n Still, that incident could have happened anywhere. And Green Day seemed to have had a fabulous time during its last visit to Las Vegas \u2014 for the When We Were Young Festival on Oct. 22, 2023, which included a surprise show at the intimate Fremont County Club three days earlier.<\/p>\n If Armstrong\u2019s Vegas venom is purely baseball-related, as it seems to be, he may have to reconsider the city he spits it at. And that\u2019s because the Oakland A\u2019s may never end up playing in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n Through the 2027 season, the team is committed to playing in Sacramento, Calif.<\/a>, which is where it may end up permanently. A growing chorus of industry insiders suspect that this is the most likely scenario,<\/a> since Fisher has so far shown no real plans for how to finance his proposed $1.5 billion stadium on the former site of the Tropicana, and reportedly remains reticent to invest any of his own money.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/michaelcondrey-858x621.jpg\")
