I was looking for something to read at the bookstore McNally Jackson<\/a> the other week when I saw Willful Disregard<\/em><\/a> on display. The staff described<\/a> it as \u201ca novel about love and texting,\u201d two things I enjoy.<\/p>\n

I read the book in 24 hours, taking photos of passages that made me laugh or wince. Here, for example, is the protagonist, Ester, when her crush won\u2019t respond to her email:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Oh Ester<\/em>, I kept thinking while I read, feeling secondhand embarrassment. I also loved the framing of female friends as \u201cthe girlfriend chorus.\u201d It reminded me of something my friend Kate once texted me when I was in the midst of a crush-related crisis:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When I texted Kate to recommend Willful Disregard<\/em>, she brought up another book: Acts of Desperation<\/a><\/em>, which renders a short, obsessive relationship and brutal breakup in minute detail. Chlo\u00e9 Caldwell\u2019s sexy novella, Women<\/a><\/em>, might also belong with these two. Just re-released, the story traces a woman\u2019s tumultuous first queer relationship.<\/p>\n

Now and again I\u2019ll find myself in the mood for a love story that doesn\u2019t<\/em> end in disaster, but I usually feel like Ayo Edebiri<\/a> when she was sent a copy of Sally Rooney\u2019s new novel: \u201cidk how but she knew i needed my triennial fix of emotionally stunted Irish ppl going thru it\u2026\u201d It\u2019s fun to watch a character send a text they really, really shouldn\u2019t and feels cathartic to watch someone slowly pick themselves back up after a bad breakup.<\/p>\n
