As of this writing, that number sits at <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/steamdb.info\/app\/1422450\/charts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:22,400 via SteamDB;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">22,400 via SteamDB<\/a>. The game is called <em>Deadlock<\/em> and we\u2019ve known that <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/valves-next-game-appears-to-be-deadlock-a-moba-hero-shooter-185418880.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Valve was working on it;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Valve was working on it<\/a> for a while, but now it seems as though we are in the midst of a soft launch of some kind.<\/p>\n<p>Again, this game hasn\u2019t been officially announced by the company, though something\u2019s certainly going on. It\u2019s likely that Valve has <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RiddleChaotic\/status\/1821754497879675236\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:opened the game up to play tests;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">opened the game up to play tests<\/a> to gauge how successful the title could be with a proper PR push behind it, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/valve-hero-shooter-deadlock-still-hasnt-been-announced-but-had-16k-steam-concurrent-players-this-weekend\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:as indicated by Eurogamer;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">as indicated by <em>Eurogamer<\/em><\/a> and others. It\u2019s a competitive MOBA shooter, billed as \u201cthe next <em>Dota<\/em>\u201d by veteran Valve reporter Tyler McVicker. It\u2019s reported to have been in development since 2018 and is a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/icefrog?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:partnership with IceFrog;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">partnership with IceFrog<\/a>, an unnamed creator who was originally behind the original <em>Defense of the Ancients<\/em> mod of <em>Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos<\/em> that started all of the <em>Dota<\/em> mania.<\/p>\n<p>By all accounts, <em>Deadlock<\/em> is already in an advanced state of development, given the robust concurrent player count. McVicker describes it as looking \u201clike <em>Valorant<\/em>, <em>Overwatch<\/em>, <em>Dota 2<\/em> and <em>Team Fortress 2<\/em> had a baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet-wrapper\" data-embed-anchor=\"9b9034cd-a9cb-5c3f-8c5a-2b9b7ecd3a65\">\n<blockquote placeholder=\"\" data-theme=\"light\" class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>Since testers started sharing Deadlock screenshots all over the place, here&#8217;s ones I can verify, featuring one of the heroes called Grey Talon. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KdZSRxObSz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:pic.twitter.com\/KdZSRxObSz;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">pic.twitter.com\/KdZSRxObSz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u200eGabe Follower (@gabefollower) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gabefollower\/status\/1791311128422748285?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:May 17, 2024;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">May 17, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>After this article was originally published, an Engadget writer got an invite to the playtest, and can confirm many of the details leaked about the game. There are currently 20 heroes to choose from, and you can enter a sandbox mode to try each of them out. You&#8217;re also able to browse ongoing matches to spectate and get a better feel for things before you&#8217;re ready to dive in. The playtest build shows that the servers are open every day, for at least 12 hours each day.<\/p>\n<p>While Valve hasn\u2019t officially announced <em>Deadlock<\/em>, likely waiting for a surprise drop of some kind, the company did <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/uspto.report\/TM\/98576353\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:trademark the name back in June;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">trademark the name back in June<\/a>. So that\u2019s something. With over 22,000 concurrents, it won\u2019t be long before we all know a lot more about this game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, August 13, 3:30PM ET: <\/strong>This story was updated after publishing with a brief explanation of what Valve&#8217;s <em>Deadlock<\/em> playtest entails. The number of concurrent players in the headline and article was also updated to reflect the game&#8217;s current player count.
