It\u2019s Elvis Week! August 9-16, 2024.<\/p>\n

This post covers the best time to visit Graceland, how long to allow at Elvis Presley\u2019s mansion, what type of ticket to buy and what you\u2019ll see when you get there.<\/p>\n

I also have links to all the fab Elvis events coming up, but in the meantime, have a peek through Graceland with me. I\u2019ve just been on my 3rd visit through and took lots more pics.<\/p>\n

Graceland is now owned by Elvis\u2019 granddaughter Riley Keough, and while not much has changed in the house \u2013 well nothing inside, but they have moved some of the archives across the road \u2013 lots has changed in the ticket\/attraction area across the road.<\/p>\n

January and August, during Elvis\u2019 birthday celebrations and Elvis Week, which this year runs from August 9-16, are the best times to come if you want to immerse yourself into the whole Elvis scene, with hundreds of other fans.<\/p>\n

But if you don\u2019t want to be there when all the fans are, pick a mid-week date outside the vacation season.<\/p>\n

In 2025 Elvis would have turned 90 years old, so there are loads of live events planned at Graceland, plus some special online events for those of us who can\u2019t get there in person. <\/p>\n

We also added a night in Tupelo, the birthplace of Elvis Presley, and I wrote about whether I think it\u2019s worth staying overnight or just adding on as a day trip<\/a> in this post.<\/p>\n

While we were waiting for the group in front of us to go inside, I noticed lots of baby oak tree saplings<\/strong> springing up in the garden in front of the mansion. The rest will have been mowed in the lawn. <\/p>\n

What a great business opportunity this would be, selling Graceland saplings to fans. Riley needs to get someone on to this. I reckon there\u2019d be a million dollars sprouting up around these trees! I suggested it to the staffer out the front with us and she said she\u2019d pass the idea on. I hope she gets a bonus!<\/p>\n

A pilgrimage to Graceland<\/a><\/strong>, at 3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard, is on the Bucket List of a huge array of Elvis fans, from rock and rollers to country music lovers and the squealing girls (now grandmas) of the 1960s and 70s.<\/p>\n

Elvis Presley\u2019s house<\/strong>, Graceland, in Memphis Tennessee, is the second most visited house in the entire US after the White House.<\/p>\n

Of course the difference is you can go inside<\/em> Elvis\u2019 house on a mansion tour<\/strong> and take as many photos as you like without a horde of bodyguards or a throng of reporters waiting for a press conference. Rooms are roped off, but zoom away!<\/p>\n

Elvis Week <\/strong>is held every August which sees Graceland hosting Elvis fans<\/a> in real life and though live streaming exclusive content.<\/p>\n

But all year round, you can peek inside the Presley mansion, check out the Graceland Hotel<\/strong> just next door (yes you can stay there, and some rooms are Elvis themed) and shop for shirts and shoes where the king (and I) shopped in Memphis!<\/p>\n

Hilariously you might also see dressed-up Elvis lookalikes roaming through Elvis Presley\u2019s home any day of the week, eating a burger in their onesie at the burger bar across the road or browsing through Elvis\u2019 collection of classic cars and planes.<\/p>\n

Visiting Memphis<\/h2>\n

Of course, there\u2019s more to Memphis than Elvis. It is a wonderful city to visit any time of year for music lovers and more. <\/p>\n

In fact I wrote this post about the many things to do in Memphis<\/a><\/strong> apart from visiting Graceland, that you could stay a week and not see it all. Check it out for music museums, the Civil Rights Museum, where to eat good BBQ and on my last trip I found a fabulous restaurant on Beale Street which is a must visit.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve visited Graceland (a national historic landmark) three times now. The house doesn\u2019t change, although they move some exhibits around once you get to the outer buildings, but oh my, the ticket area is like a mini Elvis theme park now.<\/p>\n

The first time we were on what we called our family Music Road Trip<\/a><\/strong>, a 10-day itinerary starting in Nashville, down to Memphis and ending in New Orleans, with my husband and parents. <\/p>\n

We spent three nights in downtown Memphis staying at the legendary Peabody Hotel<\/a><\/strong>, just a stone\u2019s throw from Beale Street amd easy walking distance to the Fedex Forum if you\u2019re visiting for a game. You\u2019re also close to the river for a nice walk and just a 10-minute walk down to Central BBQ and the Civil Rights Museum.<\/p>\n

We had amazing ribs at Central BBQ<\/a><\/strong> and I can also recommend taking a couple of hours to visit the Martin Luther King Jr Civil Rights Museum<\/a><\/strong> to understand the whole back story that led up to that fateful \u201cshot that rang out in the Memphis sky\u201d on April 4th 1968, and which affected Elvis deeply.<\/p>\n

The second time I visited Memphis I brought a small tour of nine people to New Orleans (where we found great music venues in NOLA<\/strong><\/a> and ate all the food) and then we visited Elvis\u2019s Memphis, and Al Green\u2019s church \u2013 although he didn\u2019t show up, so I found a great gospel church within walking distance from the Peabody too.<\/p>\n

Each year, the second week of August is Elvis Week<\/strong>, commemorating the death of Elvis Presley on 16 August 1977. <\/p>\n

When did Elvis buy Graceland?<\/h2>\n

Elvis Presley was 22 years old when he bought Graceland in March 1957 for just over $102,500. <\/p>\n

Elvis bought the house and 13.8 acres of land. It was actually his parents (Gladys and Vernon) who put down the $1,000 deposit and they and his grandmother moved in first, in the May of 1957 while Elvis was away filming Jailhouse Rock<\/strong>. He didn\u2019t get to spend his first night here until the next month.<\/p>\n

He married Priscilla Presley in May 1967 and they had their daughter Lisa Marie here at Graceland. Both women protectively guard this house and Elvis Presley Enterprises closely \u2013 and make a lot of money doing it!<\/p>\n

Why is it named Graceland?<\/h2>\n

The 17,552 square feet house used to be part of a 500-acre farm and was named after original owner Dr Thomas Moore\u2019s aunt Grace.<\/p>\n

The Graceland mansion sits on a small hill behind trees on the front lawn that slopes down to the iconic gates. Some people are actually quite surprised by how small the house looks \u2013 maybe because it\u2019s been hyped up for so many years!<\/p>\n

Elvis, the movie, recreated Graceland!<\/h3>\n

Have you seen Baz Luhrmann\u2019s Elvis movie? I loved it so much! I thought scenes were filmed here at Graceland, but in fact the mansion and every other venue in the movie were recreated in Australia<\/a> by award-winning designer Catherine Martin.<\/p>\n

How much time should I allow at Graceland?<\/h2>\n

Allow two to three hours to tour through Graceland<\/strong> and to spend time across the road from the Presley mansion where there is a veritable shopping and dining mecca. <\/p>\n

This is where you buy\/pick up your tickets and hop on the buses that take you across the road into the grounds.<\/p>\n

The only way to get through the famous gates of Graceland is to buy tickets (online or in person<\/a>) for a self-guided audio headset tour and take the shuttle bus from what I call \u201cElvis-ville\u201d across the road. It really is for crazy, hard-core Elvis Presley fans over there!<\/p>\n

It is a 200,000 sq ft entertainment complex where you buy your tickets, tour the planes (if you added that onto your ticket), tour the automobile museum, see his many stage costumes and tour through the life and times of the king. There are some interactive exhibits where you can get a pic taken looking like you\u2019re sitting next to Elvis. They\u2019re a bit naff to be honest, but in time I\u2019m sure the technology will get better!<\/p>\n

Save room to eat at Graceland<\/h3>\n

When you come to Graceland, you should also allow time after or before your tour<\/em> to eat. You\u2019ll find pizza, burgers, milkshakes \u2013 nothing spectacular. Typical diner food.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll find several dining outlets like Gladys\u2019s Diner<\/strong>. This 1960s inspired diner serves Gladys\u2019s repertoire of his favorite food like burgers, hog dogs and grilled sandwiches. <\/p>\n

Or try Vernon\u2019s Smokehouse<\/strong> to fill up on smoked meats like ribs, brisket and chicken. Try the classic southern cuisine that Elvis\u2019 loved. His favorite home cooking, included meatloaf, catfish, BBQ spaghetti \u2013 and Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Peek inside Graceland<\/h2>\n

Can you go upstairs?<\/strong> The upstairs rooms at Graceland are locked and alarmed and no one is allowed up there except members of his family. Even staff are not allowed up here, out of respect for the family as it includes Elvis\u2019 bedroom (and the bathroom where he died) as well as little Lisa Marie\u2019s room.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll pass through the kitchen where someone told me Elvis had the first microwave in the United States (?) Anyway, it cost $1000 back in the 70s. You can also spot a television set in the back.<\/p>\n

Are you ready for the Jungle Room<\/strong>? <\/h3>\n

Turn left and go down the hallway from the kitchen where you\u2019ll go down a set of stairs to find some of the wackiest rooms in the whole house \u2013 or maybe not. Check out the pool room and the yellow bar too with its mirrored ceiling!<\/p>\n

The floor and walls of the famous Jungle Room are covered in green shag carpet and wooden furniture is carved into animals, with stuffed animals sitting on the oversized furniture. Oh if walls could talk!<\/p>\n

But wait! Here\u2019s the billiards room<\/strong>, so you can decide which room would have been more fun. <\/p>\n

Once we finished walking through the house with our headsets on telling us about each room we came outside around the back of the property.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s really quite spacious out here, kind of farmland. He kept horses here.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll walk into Vernon\u2019s office, then past Elvis\u2019s private shooting range and an indoor racquetball court.<\/p>\n

He played this piano (below) on the morning of his death in his music room before he went upstairs to his bathroom. <\/p>\n

This room used to house his massive platinum records and gold records which have since been moved into their own gallery.<\/p>\n

His gold and platinum albums, plus some stage costumes used to be on display here, but they\u2019ve now taken them across the road and they have their own exhibit.<\/p>\n

At the end of the tour you come to the Meditation Garden where Elvis\u2019s grave, alongside his parents and grandmother, also lie. <\/p>\n

Each day gifts still arrive by mail from fans around the world and staff make sure they all get placed here for a turn with the king. <\/p>\n

An eternal flame burns and a statue of Jesus, given to Elvis by his friends and that used to stand in the garden, now stands at his feet.<\/p>\n

Elvis Presley was a twin, but his brother Jessie died at birth on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo Mississippi. He had a plaque made for his big brother (by a few minutes) that he never met, placed beside his parents here in the memorial garden at Graceland.<\/p>\n

Of course, it wouldn\u2019t be a tourist attraction without the shopping! <\/p>\n

Back across the road where you got your tickets are several stores selling Elvis Presley merchandise, including the king of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll\u2019s onesies that go for upwards of $3000!<\/p>\n

Where did Elvis shop for clothes?<\/h3>\n

Elvis himself shopped at Lansky<\/strong> Bros<\/strong><\/a>, a clothing store inside the Peabody Hotel<\/a><\/strong> and another store on Beale Street<\/a><\/strong>. We\u2019ve twice visited the Peabody store and it\u2019s great to get chatting with Hal Lansky.<\/p>\n

The Beale Street store was opened by his father Bernard Lansky in 1946 and his son Hal, now runs them. He remembers as a boy going with his dad in the delivery truck to take a selection of their classic shirts to Graceland for Elvis to choose from.<\/p>\n

The classic Elvis-style cotton shirts are still sold here, along with jackets (see the gold ones below) and blue suede shoes (!), as well as men\u2019s and women\u2019s fashion.<\/p>\n

History has it that a young 17-year old Elvis would look in the shop window but never come in. When he finally did, the conversation that ensued saw a lifetime of custom with the Lansky\u2019s dressing Elvis throughout his career,\u00a0including his outfit for his first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1956<\/p>\n

The first exchange between Bernard Lansky and Elvis is painted on the windows of the Lansky Brothers Peabody store, showcasing the pride the family still has in dressing Elvis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tour Elvis\u2019s planes at Graceland<\/h2>\n

The \u201cLisa Marie Presley\u201d is named after his daughter who used to be taken on whimsical jaunts as a little girl. One time they flew just to see the snow and touched down for only an hour! <\/p>\n

You can pay extra to take a tour through the planes.<\/p>\n

All year round various events are held at Graceland, some are live on the Graceland sound stage<\/a> with music icons, Elvis tribute artists and rising stars, some are live-streamed for members only. <\/p>\n

This 450-room hotel with a pool, a ball room that can hold 1000, convention hall and theatre is just a few steps from Graceland and as you\u2019ll see below, its rooms have been decorated with a nod to Elvis Presley\u2019s quirky 1970s design aesthetic.<\/p>\n

Is Graceland worth visiting?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be honest, if you\u2019re an Elvis fan, visiting Graceland is a pilgrimage you need to make at least once in your life. You will gain insights into Elvis the man here. If you\u2019re just visiting Memphis for a few days and you\u2019re not all googly-eyed over the king of rock n roll, probably not. Feedback from one of my friends was, \u201cit\u2019s a lot smaller than I expected\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

When is the best month to visit Graceland?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The best time to visit Memphis is mid-May to mid-June and mid-September to mid-October. Either side of the hot, sticky summer months. But if you want to be here for the big Elvis events, then January and August.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Can you go upstairs at Graceland?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Unfortunately not. Even staff are not allowed upstairs. This is for family only \u2013 which only makes it all the more curious, don\u2019t you think! Lisa-Marie used to come here and just sit in her old room upstairs.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

How long should we allow to visit Graceland?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The mansion tours are self guided with an audio headset, so you can take as long as you like. You\u2019ll probably want 60-90 minutes in the house, then another 60-90 minutes back across the road to dine at the restaurants, visit the museums and planes and shop for souvenirs.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Can we take pictures?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Yes! No flash photography is allowed inside, for obvious reasons. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
