More than 119K people watched this video<\/a> of a smoking palm at the Encore Beach Club, which was posted to X\/Twitter at 5:30 p.m. July 7 by the account @KMart.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so hot in Vegas,\u201d the post claimed, \u201cthe Wynn pineapple lit on fire.\u201d The video received 700K additional views when it was shared by the X\/Twitter news feed, Las Vegas Locally.<\/p>\n

To be clear, palm trees can\u2019t spontaneously combust from exposure to 115-120\u00b0F air. But facts aren\u2019t known for their virality on X\/Twitter.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI guess if the tree was dry enough the sun\u2019s just going to do its job and cook it to death,\u201d commented @DioDiablo702.<\/p>\n

@MrVasireddi knew better, theorizing it was \u201ccaused by a nearby building window reflecting sunlight onto it.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was also @nogeese\u2019s extremely alternative explanation: \u201cThat was the burning bush telling them they are all sinning in modern day Sodom and Gomorra!\u201d (sic)<\/p>\n

Liar Liar Palms on Fire!<\/h2>\n

Palm trees are<\/em> highly flammable. Called \u201cnature\u2019s tiki torches,\u201d they\u2019re loaded with combustible oil and shaped like giant candlesticks.<\/p>\n

While heat from the sun can cause their fronds to dry out, making them more likely to burn, an external ignition source \u2014 a spark, flame, or lightning strike \u2014 is still required for that to happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In July 2017, several social media users shared videos and images of a palm tree burning in Kuwait, claiming that it also spontaneously combusted.<\/p>\n

Those posts claimed the temperature there reached 143.6\u00b0F, though temperatures actually hovered around 122\u00b0F in Kuwait that month and the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth was 134\u00b0F, according to the World Meteorological Organization.<\/p>\n

It turns out, the tree shown burning in those photos and videos was struck by lightning, <\/em>according to Snopes.com,<\/a> and it didn\u2019t even happen in Kuwait.<\/p>\n

Burning Question<\/h2>\n

Casino.org<\/em> contacted the Clark County Fire Department (CCFD) where a spokesperson confirmed that an engine did respond to \u201ca small fire at that date\u201d at the Encore Beach Club.<\/p>\n

The cause of the fire, however, was \u201ca small firework\u201d in the tree \u2014 probably installed and set off by a DJ as part of their set.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cCrews put water on the tree and it was promptly extinguished,\u201d CCFD said in an email.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, news teams from both KTLA <\/em>in Los Angeles and WSVN-TV<\/em> in Miami left comments on Twitter\/X, asking @KMart for permission to show the video on their newscasts.<\/p>\n
