Back in March, when I was just<\/em> getting back out there after my marriage ended<\/a>, I shared two first-date outfits<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n

Here they are<\/a>. For those very early dates, I wanted to dress casually and maybe hold back a little? Everything felt new and scary to me. But sweet readers<\/a> pushed me to get a little flirtier: \u201cI like black jeans, but maybe with a black blouse\u2026 you can undo an extra button if a sexier vibe is in the air.\u201d Added MDB: \u201cThe black one looks like a server\u2019s outfit.\u201d Haha, noted.<\/p>\n

Since then, though, I\u2019ve taken that advice to heart. After going on dates with some handsome gentlemen, and seeing how kind and open people are (especially at this age I find), I\u2019ve felt myself soften and warm to the idea of being more vulnerable \u2014\u00a0and thus a little braver when it comes to outfits that show that I care and tried. (Does that make sense? It makes sense in my head.)<\/p>\n

For a recent drinks date, I wore a polka dot number<\/a> with Chlo\u00e9 flats<\/a> that I\u2019d found on eBay. (Dancing arm courtesy of Anton<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

When I had dinner with a cute dad at Sailor<\/a>, I paired a short skirt<\/a> with a white blouse<\/a> (similar here<\/a> and here<\/a>) and strappy sandals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And at the top of this post \u2014\u00a0on an evening walk \u2014 I was wearing a Levi\u2019s jean skirt<\/a> I\u2019ve had for a decade (!), an old floral shirt, and brown sandals<\/a> from Poshmark.<\/p>\n

Fashion can sometimes feel frivolous and extraneous, but other times it really reflects how we\u2019re feeling, our emotional temperature, what life stage we\u2019re in, all of that, don\u2019t you think? It reminds me of interviews we\u2019ve done with costume designers from Girls<\/a> and Fleabag<\/a> \u2014\u00a0and how characters\u2019 clothes can reveal what they\u2019re thinking and feeling. Not all the time, but sometimes! Claire! It\u2019s French!<\/p>\n

Now, I\u2019m so curious: What do you wear to drinks or dinners or walks or movies? What makes you feel like yourself? I would love to hear.<\/strong> <\/p>\n
