The company raised <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/06\/18\/waabis-genai-promises-to-do-so-much-more-than-power-self-driving-trucks\/\">$200 million<\/a> in a round from existing investors Uber and Khosla Ventures, alongside a number of strong strategic investors like Nvidia, Volvo Group VC, Porsche Automobil Holding SE and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waabi plans to use the funds to get to a fully driverless commercial launch in 2025, but that\u2019s not the only reason investors are so bullish on the young startup. Waabi\u2019s generative AI foundational model is capable of reasoning almost as a human would, without requiring reams of real-world data to train on, according to the startup\u2019s founder and CEO Raquel Urtasun. This makes the AI system more capital efficient and easier to scale to autonomous trucking and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urtasun said the AI\u2019s ability to generalize and develop quickly means Waabi can expand the tech to other applications, like robotaxis, humanoids or warehouse robotics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Other deals that got my attention \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bitsensing <\/strong>raised a <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/06\/18\/bitsening-raises-25m-for-its-high-resolution-radar-in-autonomous-driving\/\">$25 million Series B<\/a> to further develop its high-res radar technology for autonomous vehicles. Investors include Korea Development Bank, HL Mando Corporation, Industrial Bank of Korea and Aju Capital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LD Carbon <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/apac\/news-releases\/ld-carbon-closes-28m-investment-to-scale-production-of-sustainable-carbon-black-and-pyrolysis-oil-302176383.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raised $28 million<\/a> in a Series C round led by Toyota\u2019s growth fund, Woven Capital, to advance the circular economy by diverting used tires from landfills. The startup also aims to develop high-performance recycled car parts, according to a statement sent to TechCrunch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RBW EV<\/strong>, a London-based EV manufacturer of new, hand-crafted classic British sports cars, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finsmes.com\/2024\/06\/rbw-ev-cars-receives-10m-investment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raised \u00a310 million<\/a> from Meson Capital Partners. The startup currently offers a Roadster model with a starting price of around $135,000 and plans to debut its GT model later this year at a starting price of $151,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Unigrid<\/strong> raised<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/06\/13\/unigrid-wants-to-make-batteries-cheaper-and-safer-using-sodium\/\"> $12 million<\/a> in a round led by Transition VC and Ritz Venture Capital to make sodium-ion batteries, which promise to be a cheaper, safer alternative that can complement lithium-ion batteries.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-notable-reads-and-other-tidbits\">Notable reads and other tidbits<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"257\" src=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png?w=680\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1926823\" style=\"width:1270px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png 1024w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png?resize=150,38 150w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png?resize=300,75 300w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png?resize=768,193 768w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png?resize=680,171 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-autonomous-vehicles\">Autonomous vehicles<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>University of Central Florida<\/strong> study suggests that autonomous vehicles (AVs) are safer than humans in routine circumstances during daylight hours. But in other conditions they struggle, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2435896-driverless-cars-are-mostly-safer-than-humans-but-worse-at-turns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">New Scientist.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>California<\/strong> senator Dave Cortese <a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/2024\/06\/cortese-shelves-robotaxi-bill-after-committee-tries-to-strip-local-control-provisions-00163750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">shelved<\/a> his <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/04\/27\/a-wrestling-match-over-who-should-control-robotaxis-is-playing-out-in-california\/\">SB 915 bill<\/a> (which would give cities more control over AV deployment) after the Assembly committee proposed amendments that would effectively strip the bill of its original intent. The AV industry sees this as a win, but Cortese said he would eventually reintroduce it. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Project 3 Mobility<\/strong>, the Croatia-based autonomous vehicle startup co-founded by <strong>Mate Rimac<\/strong>, is set to make what it describes as a <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/project-3-mobility_newnamenewvibe-innovation-p3evolution-activity-7176574929209831425-oNPQ\/\">\u201cmajor reveal\u201d<\/a> on June 26. As a reminder, the company recently raised 100 million euros ($107 million) in a Series A round that included backing from TASARU Mobility Investments, a company fully owned by Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electric-vehicles-charging-amp-batteries\">Electric vehicles, charging &amp; batteries<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chinese automaker and battery maker <strong>BYD<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/news\/reuters.com,2024-06-18:newsml_Zaw738Zmg:0-pressr-byd-and-ampersand-to-collaborate-on-electrifying-africa-s-transport-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">signed an MoU<\/a> with <strong>Ampersand<\/strong>, an African EV energy tech company, to decarbonize Africa\u2019s commercial motorbike transport system. The deal involves Ampersand purchasing BYD\u2019s battery cells to build around 40,000 e-motorcycles by the end of 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ChargePoint<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/6\/18\/24180664\/lg-electronics-chargepoint-ev-charging-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">teaming up<\/a> with South Korea\u2019s <strong>LG Electronics <\/strong>to install more EV charging stations in the U.S. As part of the deal, ChargePoint will provide software to operate LG\u2019s EV chargers, and LG will supply the hardware to bolster ChargePoint\u2019s network.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Revel<\/strong> has hired a couple more former Tesla employees to leadership positions in its EV infrastructure team, the startup announced. This appears to be part of a growing trend from automakers and EV charging companies to scoop up top talent that Elon Musk appears to have <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/04\/30\/elon-musk-tesla-charging-policy-layoffs-cuts\/\">fired on a whim<\/a> six weeks ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ultium<\/strong> workers at GM\u2019s Lordstown, Ohio, battery cell plant have <a href=\"https:\/\/uaw.org\/video-ultium-members-vote-98-to-ratify-contract-that-sets-new-standard-for-ev-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">voted to ratify<\/a> a new contract that will give production workers $35 an hour by October 2027, as well as benefits and health and safety protections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tesla\">Tesla<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tesla <\/strong>held its shareholder meeting last Thursday following an <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/06\/13\/tesla-musk-pay-package-shareholder-vote\/\">unprecedented social media battle<\/a> waged by Musk and Tesla fans. It should surprise no one that investors <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/06\/13\/tesla-approve-elon-musk-compensation-texas\/\">voted to approve<\/a> Elon Musk\u2019s astronomical pay package. They also voted in favor of reincorporating Tesla in Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Tesla has begun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/tesla-kicks-off-legal-fight-reinstate-musks-pay-2024-06-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">fighting for legal recognition<\/a> of that shareholder vote. The automaker wrote to the Delaware judge who, in January, ruled that Musk\u2019s pay package <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/01\/30\/elon-musks-56b-tesla-pay-deal-is-unfair-judge-rules\/\">was unfair <\/a>to say that the shareholder vote \u201csignificantly impacts\u201d her ruling voiding the pay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not the only legal battle Tesla got itself into over the past week. While some shareholders want to give Musk everything he asked for, others are standing up to him. A group of shareholders <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/06\/13\/tesla-shareholders-sue-musk-for-starting-competing-ai-company\/\">sued Musk and the Tesla board <\/a>last week, claiming that they breached fiduciary duties and unjustly enriched Musk by allowing the CEO to launch xAI, which they say is a competing AI company.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-misc\">Misc.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Quick-commerce<\/strong> startups promising 15-minute delivery rose and fell in U.S. cities. But in India, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/06\/17\/can-quick-commerce-leapfrog-e-commerce-in-india\/?utm_campaign=tc_daily_am&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_zVsSnlP6gXdW--YPQwEiDXIgfO2__doq4X0Y-J9lPBxB3XY-Z2FC6QFuN5TK6DRy13HZBA0anrM0JThubCMnsw91GqW-0qJ_P6TvR-HRPRvs-Gvk&amp;_hsmi=312107063&amp;utm_source=tc\">the sector is growing<\/a> alongside the country\u2019s rapid urbanization.
