Since then, the game has received a handful of updates as the live-service journey begins and <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 dPMosf sc-145m8ut-0 erKGZM js_link\" data-ga=\"[[&quot;Embedded Url&quot;,&quot;Internal link&quot;,&quot;https:\/\/kotaku.com\/xdefiant-review-is-it-good-free-call-of-duty-ubisoft-1851499598&quot;,{&quot;metric25&quot;:1}]]\" href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/xdefiant-review-is-it-good-free-call-of-duty-ubisoft-1851499598\"><em>XDefiant<\/em><\/a><\/span><em> <\/em>evolves and changes over the coming months and years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cLaunch has been great,\u201d said Rubin. \u201cWe\u2019re extremely happy with our player numbers. It\u2019s gone far beyond what we expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Rubin explained to <em>Kotaku <\/em>that Ubisoft had tried to keep the game \u201cpretty lowkey\u201d and \u201cgrassroots.\u201d The idea was to build a game and a dedicated community of players at the same time. However, the massive influx of new players and eyeballs since launch isn\u2019t a bad thing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cThis tells us that gamers are genuinely interested in what we\u2019re doing and are enjoying the fun gameplay that we\u2019ve created,\u201d explained Rubin. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-1bwb26k-1 dezcon\" id=\"h123117\">How Ubisoft plans to fix and balance <em>XDefiant<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">However, while a lot of people have hopped into Ubisoft\u2019s new F2P shooter, there have been some complaints from players about hit registration issues and desyncing problems. Basically, players are sharing clips of being killed behind a wall because on the other player\u2019s screen they hadn\u2019t made it to safety yet. Or they\u2019re sharing videos of players being shot, but not taking damage as you would expect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had a great launch so far, but it has come with some issues. We own that and we\u2019re not trying to hide from it,\u201d said Rubin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cThis is the first FPS powered by the Snowdrop engine. So with that comes a lot of work to reconfigure the engine. And we\u2019re finding new things all the time. There are growing pains, but in a good way for this team.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Rubin further added that as a \u201clive game\u201d the real work is just beginning and they \u201cabsolutely\u201d will continue to fix, tune, and improve \u201cevery part\u201d of <em>XDefiant<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"flex-video widescreen\" style=\"width:100%;height:100%\"><iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/embed\/inset\/iframe?id=youtube-video-NoNpmAzGyB8&amp;start=0\" data-chomp-id=\"NoNpmAzGyB8\" data-recommend-id=\"youtube:\/\/NoNpmAzGyB8\" id=\"youtube-NoNpmAzGyB8\" data-recommended=\"false\" class=\"core-inset lazyload\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"webkitAllowFullScreen\" mozallowfullscreen=\"mozallowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><span data-chomp-id=\"NoNpmAzGyB8\" data-recommend-id=\"youtube:\/\/NoNpmAzGyB8\" id=\"youtube-NoNpmAzGyB8\" data-recommended=\"false\" class=\"js_recommend\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"sc-1ptbguh-0 dHvBHx caption\">Ubisoft<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">With millions of players yelling online about problems, balance, and changes, I wondered what Ubisoft\u2019s philosophy was for updating <em>XDefiant <\/em>and possibly changing its meta with a patch. Creative director Safy Saada explains that the team waits long enough to get plenty of data and then combines that with player feedback. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cAs <em>XDefiant <\/em>evolves, we will keep finetuning the game,\u201d said Saada. \u201cWe know we\u2019ll always have [an] evolving meta and that\u2019s a key element for this type of game.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\"> Saada says every time the team adds something new, like a faction or weapon, they\u2019ll \u201cprobably have to rebalance\u201d existing content. The creative director did confirm with <em>Kotaku <\/em>that Ubisoft plans to use \u201cprivate test servers\u201d in the future to \u201censure its first iteration\u201d of a change is as balanced as possible. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-1bwb26k-1 dezcon\" id=\"h123118\">Bunny hopping in <em>XDefiant <\/em>isn\u2019t going anywhere<\/h2>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">One hot topic among the playerbase right now is bunny hopping in <em>XDefiant<\/em>. This is the act of players hopping up and down in different directions in firefights. At launch, players complained it was too easy to bunny hop and get kills, so in a recent patch (<span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 dPMosf sc-145m8ut-0 erKGZM js_link\" data-ga=\"[[&quot;Embedded Url&quot;,&quot;External link&quot;,&quot;https:\/\/www.ubisoft.com\/en-us\/game\/xdefiant\/news\/dj0iHxeSeSIcjkiH3Hxi8\/xdefiant-y1s03-patch-notes&quot;,{&quot;metric25&quot;:1}]]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ubisoft.com\/en-us\/game\/xdefiant\/news\/dj0iHxeSeSIcjkiH3Hxi8\/xdefiant-y1s03-patch-notes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which went live after this interview<\/a><\/span>) Ubisoft added some aiming accuracy penalties to b-hopping. But many players are still not happy about the current jumping meta. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cThe intent of our movement has always been clear to us. We want there to be a skill gap,\u201d said Rubin. \u201cWe also want there to be players saying, \u2018I\u2019m learning, I\u2019m getting better at this game, I\u2019m learning how to use the tools that the game has.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Rubin confirmed to <em>Kotaku<\/em> that it won\u2019t be \u201cnerfing\u201d bunny hopping \u201cinto the ground.\u201d But, as we saw with the recent accuracy penalty update, the team is still tweaking movement and the hops. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cWe had an intent. And looking at that intent, we realized there were some things that needed to be adjusted,\u201d said Rubin. \u201cWe\u2019re adjusting the attributes on things like jump and other parts of the game to better suit the intended design that we wanted. Our intent was to always have <em>XDefiant <\/em>be a skilled FPS with good clean feeling movement that\u2019s not overly complex, but is fun to master.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-1bwb26k-1 dezcon\" id=\"h123119\">Making <em>XDefiant\u2019<\/em>s fan-favorite maps<\/h2>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">The game\u2019s various maps are one area of <em>XDefiant <\/em>that has received near-universal praise from fans and critics alike. While a couple of them aren\u2019t as great as the rest\u2014looking at you \u201cTimes Square\u201d\u2014the majority of <em>XDefiant<\/em>\u2019s 14 maps are fantastic, rivaling the maps found in many other popular shooters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Saada says he and the team are \u201csuper happy\u201d about how <em>XDefiant<\/em>\u2019s maps have been so well received by the community. According to the creative director, the maps in <em>XDefiant<\/em> are one of the game\u2019s \u201ckey pillars.\u201d I asked Ubisoft what goes into making a good arena shooter map, and Saada told me the team always tries to \u201cstart simple\u201d and that the devs \u201creally wanted to go back\u201d to the original three-lane maps found in older <em>Call of Duty<\/em> games and similar shooters of the era. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cThen, the interesting part is bringing in what\u2019s fun about the Ubisoft IPs we\u2019re using,\u201d said Saada. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"flex-video widescreen\" style=\"width:100%;height:100%\"><iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/embed\/inset\/iframe?id=youtube-video-5IB4Lur9YjM&amp;start=0\" data-chomp-id=\"5IB4Lur9YjM\" data-recommend-id=\"youtube:\/\/5IB4Lur9YjM\" id=\"youtube-5IB4Lur9YjM\" data-recommended=\"false\" class=\"core-inset lazyload\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"webkitAllowFullScreen\" mozallowfullscreen=\"mozallowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><span data-chomp-id=\"5IB4Lur9YjM\" data-recommend-id=\"youtube:\/\/5IB4Lur9YjM\" id=\"youtube-5IB4Lur9YjM\" data-recommended=\"false\" class=\"js_recommend\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"sc-1ptbguh-0 dHvBHx caption\">Ubisoft<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">In the game\u2019s next season, starting on July 2, Clubhouse from <em>Rainbow Six Siege<\/em> will be added to <em>XDefiant<\/em>. And while that Ubisoft tactical shooter is known for its destructible environments, <em>XDefiant <\/em>can\u2019t match that kind of gameplay. However, Ubisoft still found a way to \u201ccelebrate\u201d the game and its destruction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201c[Clubhouse in <em>XDefiant<\/em> looks] like an <em>R6<\/em> match just happened, with a lot of holes in the walls and floors as a part of the way we designed our lanes,\u201d explained Saada. \u201cSo it\u2019s really about mixing iconic flavors and elements from our titles with solid proven designs.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-1bwb26k-1 dezcon\" id=\"h123120\">The challenges of making something like XDefiant<\/h2>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">A lot of work goes into developing, launching, and then maintaining an online video game.  I asked if Saada thinks players don\u2019t realize how complicated these games are to develop, and he said that players know more today than 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Saada also said that even the team, made up of experienced devs, didn\u2019t quite realize the \u201camount of work\u201d involved with a game like <em>XDefiant <\/em>until they actually started to make it. He also said that while making a game like this takes a lot of time and energy, it\u2019s also a \u201cvery fascinating\u201d process. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cTo start with just an idea and work all the way to the point where it gets in the hands of players and then making that idea evolve while experiencing it with the players, it\u2019s a fascinating process,\u201d said Saada. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\"><em>XDefiant <\/em>is out now on Xbox Series X\/S, PS5, and PC.
