An avid Phish fan\u2019s bid for stoner glory on 4\/20 made him the first \u2014 and probably last \u2014 person to take a bong hit in the Las Vegas Sphere.<\/p>\n

Instagram user @acid_farts, whose real name is undisclosed in media reports about this incident, uploaded a video of himself sucking pot into his lungs on what people in the cannabis community consider a national holiday.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst bong hit to ever be ripped in the @spherevegas,\u201d the post\u2019s caption read. \u201c@phish somebody call [the Guinness Book of World Records].\u201d<\/p>\n

In the video, audience members surrounding Mr. Farts can be heard cheering and screaming \u201cUSA, USA!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Farts, who claims to have attended 187 Phish concerts, tagged the official Sphere account, to make sure they wouldn\u2019t miss it.<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t.<\/em><\/p>\n

After Mr. Farts purchased tickets to see Dead & Company on June 6 at the Sphere, he was FedExed a legal notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knowingly violated the guest code of conduct by visibly smoking inside the venue,\u201d it read. \u201cSphere Entertainment Co. will not tolerate actions that threaten the safety and security of our guests and employees.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the notice, Mr. Farts received a lifetime ban not only from the Sphere, but from all other concert venues owned by James Dolan. These include the Beacon Theatre, Radio City Music Hall, the Chicago Theatre, and the one that hurt Mr. Farts the most \u2014 Madison Square Garden, where Phish is famous for playing on New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/p>\n

All these venues reportedly use facial recognition to ban Dolan\u2019s enemies<\/a> \u2014 including attorneys who have litigated against him and his business interests.<\/p>\n

Banned Aid<\/h2>\n

Since that time, Sphere Entertainment has had a change of heart, explaining the legal notice as an administrative mistake.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a breakdown in our process due to a change in personnel which resulted in the letter being sent inadvertently,\u201d read a statement from the company. \u201cThis customer is not banned from our properties, however, it is still against our policies, which are in accordance with local laws, to smoke, bring glassware into our venues, and disrupt other fans\u2019 enjoyment of the event.\u201d<\/p>\n

On June 12, Jennifer Koester, the Sphere\u2019s former president of business operations, was promoted to president of Sphere Entertainment, a position formerly held by Dolan.<\/p>\n

That change in personnel, combined with stories sympathetic to Mr. Farts published in Rolling Stone <\/em>and Variety<\/em>, appeared to do the trick.<\/p>\n

How Mr. Farts snuck such a sizeable device past the security checkpoint was not disclosed.<\/p>\n

But he\u2019s wise not to try it again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
