Image credit: Gughanbose &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Three temples of the Chola: the Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikondacholisvaram, the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, and the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, are dated to the 11th and 12th centuries.<\/p>\n<p><em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Brihadeeshwara Temple<\/em>, of which foundations were laid by the Chola king Rajaraja I in 1002 AD, is probably the finest temple in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n<h2><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Powerful Chola Dynasty<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0Chola dynasty\u00a0was one of the longest-ruling dynasties in the history of\u00a0southern India. The earliest references to this Tamil\u00a0dynasty are preserved inscriptions dated to the 3rd century BC left by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancientpages.com\/2021\/03\/04\/how-great-emperor-ashoka-realized-and-showed-all-living-beings-matter\/\"><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Ashoka<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ashoka, who\u00a0died in 232 BC, \u00a0was one of India&#8217;s most extraordinary emperors, the Maurya Dynasty. The magnificent Chola Temples testify to the remarkable achievements of the Chola architects, engineers, and artisans.<\/p>\n<h2><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Significance And Beauty Of The Chola Temples<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Chola kings strongly emphasized the importance of temples, which were places of gatherings for political, economic, and cultural activities, and all-important official ceremonies were held there. With time, they became consumers, moneylenders, and employers of priests, musicians, artisans, and people (both men and women) working in temple service.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, these temples were considered important centers of education and learning, where Sanskrit played a crucial role. Yet another magnificent part of the temples are unique, powerful\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">gopurams<\/em>\u00a0(towers), which date back to the early structures of the Tamil kings Cholas, Cheras, Pandyas, and Pallavas.<\/p>\n<p>The Chola temples have all their massive superstructures, richly adorned with portraits, decorative sculptures, paintings, and icons. The temple, dedicated to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancientpages.com\/2019\/04\/08\/shiva-hindu-god-who-resides-in-every-being-and-in-all-things\/\"><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Shiva<\/strong><\/a>, characterizes the tradition of Chola master builders, who indeed loved symmetrical geometry, which is visible in the planning of the temple.<\/p>\n<p>Chola era art demanded dedicated and sophisticated artisans, and their legacy is still admired in India.<\/p>\n<p>Written by<strong>\u00a0\u2013 A.
