A couple weeks ago, we featured a reader comment<\/a> from Kristen: \u201cI\u2019m an introvert with a husband and four kids, so I\u2019m always trying to find a space where I can be alone. I joked to my husband that if we could move the back wall of our bedroom forward, we could create a tiny room for me. For my 40th birthday, he did it!\u201d Dozens (hundreds?) of readers asked to see photos, so without further ado, here you are\u2026<\/p>\n

\"a<\/a><\/p>\n

Just outside Dallas, Kristen lives with her husband, Jeff, and their four kids \u2014\u00a0Avery, Sawyer, Ben and Shea \u2014 so, needless to say, they have a busy household. When she went through a depression in 2015, she realized she had nowhere to be alone. \u201cI was crying a lot but didn\u2019t want to cry in front of my kids,\u201d she told me on the phone. \u201cI told my husband, I need a cry room, and I joked that we could move the wall up in our bedroom and create a little nook.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"a<\/a><\/p>\n

After a while, Kristen felt better \u2014\u00a0\u201cI got on Wellbutrin, which was so wonderful, it\u2019s changed my life,\u201d she says \u2014\u00a0but Jeff didn\u2019t forget her request. The night before her 40th birthday, the couple was lying in bed when he pulled out a birthday card. \u201cThe front said, \u2018You\u2019re my human panic room,’\u201d says Kristen, \u201cAnd inside he had written, \u2018But you might need one of your own.’\u201d He had also included plans drawn by their designer friend Rachel<\/a>. \u201cI FREAKED OUT!\u201d says Kristen. \u201cI was like, What, are you kidding me???????<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\"a<\/a><\/p>\n

Nowadays, the bookshelves in their bedroom have a hidden door that opens to Kristen\u2019s own cozy, beautiful alone-time space.<\/p>\n

\"a<\/a><\/p>\n

Paint: Eraser Pink<\/a>. Blue chair: Nugget<\/a>. Pillowcase: Sage and Clare<\/a>. Smiley light: MoMA<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMy dream was to be able to fall headfirst into my room if I wanted to,\u201d says Kristen. \u201cI wanted it to feel soft and safe.\u201d Her brother made the rainbow sign and Rachel decorated the space. Of course, Kristen\u2019s four kids love the room, too: \u201cThere have been times when there are chips in the floor and I\u2019m like, someone\u2019s come in here!\u201d<\/p>\n

\"a<\/a><\/p>\n

When she\u2019s alone in the nook, Kristen reads or listens to books (recent favorites include Good Material<\/a>, Anita Monte Laughs Last<\/a>, and Shark Heart<\/a>), crochets, and knits sweaters. \u201cGrandma life is my dream life,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\"a<\/a><\/p>\n

One wall displays notecards from friends and family. \u201cI saw that Drew Barrymore had something like that, and I\u2019m a big words-of-affirmation person,\u201d she says. \u201cI have so many from my kids when they were little, like \u2018Happy Mother\u2019s Day\u2019 but they can\u2019t spell it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"a<\/a><\/p>\n

Kristen also makes sweaters for herself and her kids. \u201cI read a book about knitting and taught myself,\u201d she told me. She finds patterns on the Ravelry app<\/a> and social media. \u201cThere\u2019s a whole world of us on Instagram,\u201d she says. \u201cThere are hashtags of different patterns and people share their modifications. It\u2019s such a supportive wonderful place.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"a<\/a><\/p>\n

Her designer friend Rachel Brasch<\/a> helped pull everything together. \u201cShe has an amazing eye for design and was so good at making my dreams come true,\u201d says Kristen.<\/p>\n

\"a<\/a><\/p>\n

And how cute is their family? \u201cJeff is so sweet, he\u2019s really fun,\u201d says Kristen about her husband. \u201cHe went through a depression when he was in college, so he was the best ever when I\u2019d lie in bed and cry. He supported me and never rushed me. He\u2019s the best, I just love him so much.\u201d<\/p>\n
