Do you hang art in your kitchen? I\u2019ve always viewed the room as utilitarian \u2014 I go in, I cook, I\u2019m out of there! \u2014\u00a0but lately I\u2019ve been craving a homier feel. Taping a family snapshot above the sink or leaning a watercolor next to the toaster feels like an easy way to freshen up the space, don\u2019t you think? Here are eight ways to display art in a kitchen\u2026<\/p>\n

Taping paintings onto doors \u2014 and resting artwork or tiles on top \u2014 makes a home feel lived in and layered. \u201cWhen you have a lot of pictures, you have to start hanging them wherever you can,\u201d says Wendy Coggins in Minneapolis<\/a>. (Also, how fun is that champagne cork collection?) <\/p>\n

A themed gallery wall is a fun ongoing project. \u201cAs soon as I hung my first pear, it felt like a magnet,\u201d says author Catherine Newman<\/a>. \u201cPeople now send me pear photos and postcards and drawings. The collection was this organic thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning cookbooks to display their covers makes kitchen shelves look beautiful. \u201cOur biggest fights in our marriage come down to me buying cookbooks when our shelves are already overflowing,\u201d laughs author Adam Roberts<\/a>. \u201cBut if I buy a lot of cookbooks, he buys a lot of records, so we\u2019re kind of tit for tat.\u201d<\/p>\n

If your kitchen doesn\u2019t have windows, bring nature inside with landscape portraits, like designer Holly Waterfield<\/a> does in her 575-square-foot Brooklyn family apartment.<\/p>\n

You could also put up children\u2019s artwork. \u201cMy kids started drawing self-portraits in kindergarten,\u201d says Holly<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing how the drawings show how their features changed through the years. When Emmy was in middle school, I realized,\u2018Oh, now she has high cheekbones.\u2019 And when Bodhi was a baby he had enamel hypoplasia, which made his first two baby teeth came in all yellow and brown. So, in his kindergarten self-portrait, he drew these yellow, bumpy teeth! He was not shy about them at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alex Mill\u2019s creative director Somsack Sikhounmuong<\/a> hung a sweet Hugo Guinness linocut<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Erika<\/p>\n

And our friend Erika Veurink<\/a> in Brooklyn displays a cool photo of her grandfather: \u201cHe used to race cars, and when I saw this photo hanging in his garage, I made him give it to me so I could make prints for my sister and myself.\u201d Now I\u2019m inspired to look through old family photos.<\/p>\n
