(Image: FBI)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alexander \u201cAlex Gyros\u201d Gagianas is accused of being a bookie and enforcer for what prosecutors are calling \u201cthe Gerodemos gambling organization,\u201d a Chicago Outfit-linked gambling ring based out of restaurants in Northwest Indiana and suburban Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>He was one of 22 people arrested in coordinated raids by the FBI on April 29, the culmination of an investigation dubbed \u201cOperation Porterhouse Parlay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a motion to detain filed by federal prosecutors this week, on October 17, 2024, Gagianas texted alleged ringleader James \u201cJimmy the Greek\u201d Gerodemos about a gambling debt that needed to be settled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour buddy never called me yesterday so I can give him the bid to paint his house,\u201d Gagianas wrote, according to the filing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo u do carpentry work too?\u201d Gerodemos replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI focus on just painting, but I am quite the handy man,\u201d returned Gagianas.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Scorsese Fans<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to prosecutors, in the Martin Scorsese movie, <em>The Irishman,<\/em> \u201cpainting houses\u201d refers to killing people, while \u201ccarpentry work\u201d is code for disposing of a body.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the exchange, Gerodemos sent Gagianas a text with a YouTube link to the relevant scene from the film, according to court documents.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>Neither Gagianas nor Gerodemos are accused of killing anyone. But prosecutors used the conversation to argue that releasing Gagianas would pose a \u201cclear and present danger\u201d to a prospective witness in the case, referred to in court documents as \u201cextortion Victim #2,\u201d as well as members of the victim\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>They also argued that he represents a flight risk because of his dual Greek citizenship. They are asking the judge to impose a $500,000 bond.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Threats of Violence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Gagianas is facing charges that include operating an illegal gambling business and extortion. The Gerodemos gambling organization is accused of conducting a campaign of intimidation and harassment with threats of violence against Victim 2 and others.<\/p>\n<p>According to prosecutors, Gagianas later attempted to collect the debt in Florida, searching for Victim 2 at a casino where he was known to gamble, but he failed to locate him.
