In the final days of the expedition, archaeologists discovered two more burials with unexpected contents.

According to Tatyana Grechkina, PhD in History and chief researcher at the Nasledie Scientific and Production Institution, the upper burial (No. 52) contained a male skeleton in a sub-rectangular pit with the head facing west.

Credit: Astrakhan Museum-Reserve

“He was lying on his stomach, and it was clear his hands had been bound even before he was pushed into the grave: the arm bones protruded from beneath the left side of his ribs, with his hands positioned very close to each other. The front of his skull was facing upward, meaning his neck had clearly been broken, after which he was likely thrown into the grave. His legs were apparently bound at the ankles as well. About 20 cm north of the body lay the leg bones of a horse—two front and two back—bent at the knees, with the knees facing down. Next to the bones lay a stirrup and buckle from a horse harness. The artifacts date to the 12th to late 13th centuries,” Tatyana Grechkina shared.

“The fact that he was buried in a separate grave, quite large in area, that the bones of a horse’s legs were placed there, and there was a harness – all this contradicts the idea that this was an execution,” the archaeologist suggested.

At a depth of 20 cm beneath this burial, an earlier burial (No. 53) was discovered, dating approximately to the mid-13th century. The oval pit contained the body lying head-on to the east.

While clearing the remains, archaeologists discovered that the head and upper torso were covered with a dark coating. One hypothesis is that these could be the remains of leather armor and a helmet. Arrowheads—one flat and two square ones—and a saber in a wooden sheath were found in the grave. The saber measured 112 cm in its sheath, and the blade was approximately one meter long.

Unusually Long Saber

The saber’s restoration lasted four months. According to restorer Mikhail Golovachev, the item arrived in a ruined state.

“The artifact was removed by archaeologists from the excavation site as a block, including the soil; it weighed 15 kg. This is a unique case of preservation. The fact that the iron blade was kept in a wooden scabbard played a significant role in its preservation. The wood was preserved with iron oxides,” Golovachev explained.

Credit: Astrakhan Museum-Reserve

He also noted that the saber is unusually long and was not mass-produced, since most blades measured about 70 cm. It’s worth noting that the skeleton was only about 175 cm long.

Credit: Astrakhan Museum-Reserve

Archaeologists found approximately 50 square centimeters of birch bark beneath the saber, which may be from a birch-bark quiver.
