(Image: Shutterstock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has set a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/lumbee-tribe-to-vote-on-casino-plan-after-federal-recognition\/\">special election for Tuesday, June 23<\/a>, the tribe announced this week. That day, tribal members will vote on whether they wish to provide the Tribal Council with the authority to regulate casino gaming.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If the constitutional amendment passes, the Lumbee Tribe would be cleared to move forward in developing a casino on sovereign land it owns in Robeson County. In 2025, the tribe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/lumbee-land-buy-on-i-95-raises-prospect-of-north-carolinas-fourth-casino\/\">bought a 241-acre property<\/a> near Interstate 95 in the southeastern part of the state for $6 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After years of trying, the Lumbee people secured federal recognition late last year. The designation allows the Native American community to conduct Class I and II gaming, as defined by the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, on their territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For slot machines and live dealer table games, including house-banked games like blackjack, craps, and roulette, the Lumbee will need to enter into a Class III compact with the state. The Lumbee has not yet said publicly whether it has a casino partner in place to develop and run its possible casino.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>North Carolina Tribal Casinos<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Lumbee Tribe seeks to join the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the Catawba Nation in owning tribal casinos in North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Cherokees own Harrah\u2019s Cherokee and Harrah\u2019s Cherokee Valley River in Murphy, with partner Caesars Entertainment operating the properties. The Catawbas are amid construction of the permanent Two Kings Casino Resort, while the temporary casino continues to operate. Delaware North is Catawba\u2019s partner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Lumbee Tribe is by far the largest Native community in North Carolina, with approximately 60,000 members.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What form of economic development we take early on in this new era, whether gaming is a part of our future or not, will be determined by the will of the Lumbee people,\u201d said Lumbee Tribal Chairman John Lowery. \u201cIf and when our people vote for gaming, this 241-acre tract could serve as the site of a casino and resort.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The property is near Chicken Road, close to the towns of McDonald and Raynham. Along with a casino and hotel, the resort blueprint includes numerous other amenities and mixed-use components, such as a golf course, a Topgolf-like driving range, and a water park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If gaming is dismissed by tribal members, Lowery says the property can be utilized for other economic development and initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I-95 is the principal interstate of the Eastern Seaboard. Spanning from Miami to Maine, the road links numerous major cities, including Jacksonville, Savannah, Richmond, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, New York City, and Boston. The Lumbee casino would be located between Columbia to the South and Raleigh to the north.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Trump-Backed Tribe<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The federal Interior Department\u2019s Bureau of Indian Affairs under President Donald Trump was supportive of classifying the tribe as a sovereign community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">North Carolina was a key swing state during the 2024 election.
