Brian Armstrong, above, says the company must become \u201clean, fast, and AI-native.\u201d (Image: David Dee Delgado\/Getty for The New York Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a message sent to employees on Tuesday, and later posted publicly on X, CEO Brian Armstrong said the company had reached an \u201cinflection point\u201d driven by the downturn in crypto markets and rapid improvements in AI tools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are adjusting early and deliberately to rebuild Coinbase to be lean, fast, and AI-native,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWe need to return to the speed and focus of our startup founding, with AI at our core.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>The company employed 4,951 full-time staff as of February, according to regulatory filings, suggesting the cuts could affect roughly 700 employees. Coinbase shares closed down more than 2% on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Last month, New York Attorney General Letitia James <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/new-york-sues-coinbase-gemini-titan-for-3-4-billion-over-prediction-markets\/\">sued Coinbase over alleged illegal prediction-market gambling<\/a> operations, with <em>Forbes <\/em>estimating the company\u2019s exposure to be around $1.2 billion.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Humans on the Edge\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Armstrong said the layoffs were not solely about reducing costs but reflected a broader restructuring of the business around smaller teams and AI-assisted workflows.<\/p>\n<p>He described Coinbase\u2019s future structure as \u201can intelligence, with humans around the edge aligning it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The changes include flattening the company hierarchy to a maximum of five layers below the CEO and COO, reducing management roles and increasing the number of direct reports overseen by senior leaders.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p>Layers slow things down and create coordination tax,\u201d Armstrong wrote. \u201cThe future is small, high context teams that can move quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He also said Coinbase would build \u201cAI-native pods\u201d capable of managing \u201cfleets of agents\u201d and experiment with dramatically smaller teams, including \u201cone person teams\u201d in which engineering, design and product management responsibilities are combined into a single role.<\/p>\n<p>Armstrong said recent advances in AI had already transformed productivity inside the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past year, I\u2019ve watched engineers use AI to ship in days what used to take a team weeks,\u201d he wrote. \u201cNon-technical teams are now shipping production code and many of our workflows are being automated.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Harsh But Necessary\u2019 <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Employees affected by the cuts had their system access removed immediately, Armstrong said, describing the move as \u201csudden and harsh\u201d but necessary to protect customer information.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes during a difficult period for the crypto industry, with digital currency values falling despite crypto-friendly moves in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>For all its expansion into prediction markets, Coinbase still generates most of its revenue from trading fees, leaving the business exposed to swings in market sentiment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/coinbase-to-cut-14-of-workforce-in-major-ai-overhaul\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted on: May 6, 2026, 06:23h.\u00a0 Last updated on: May 7, 2026, 04:49h.
