Someone recently pointed out to bestselling novelist Olivia Muenter<\/a> that she tends to romanticize life. \u201cThat\u2019s my instinct,\u201d she told me. \u201cOf course, life is also hard and messy, but I\u2019m always looking for that beauty.\u201d Olivia spoke with me from her Hudson Valley home, after the release of her buzzy new novel, Little One<\/em><\/a>. Below, she shares a movie that inspired her style, jeans she\u2019s worn hundreds of times, and a necklace engraved with a meaningful reminder\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cPlus-size-specific fashion can be deeply tragic. But when I saw these cuffed Eloquii jeans<\/a>, I thought, Those are cool, period<\/em>. Now I\u2019ve worn them a thousand times. And Loeffler Randall<\/a> is my favorite shoe brand of all time. For special life occasions, I\u2019ll treat myself to a pair. My wedding shoes were from there, and the shoes I wore to the first big event for my debut novel<\/a> were from there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Button-down: thrifted, similar<\/a>. Jeans: \u201cold ASOS,\u201d similar<\/a>. Socks: similar<\/a>. Slippers:\u00a0L.L. Bean<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cGrowing up, I was always a bit bigger and taller than everyone. I loved fashion, but I felt like I didn\u2019t have the body required to be a fashionable person. It really helped to find people on social media who look like me in some way. My long-time follows are Kristina Zias<\/a>, Rae Ann Langas<\/a>, Abisola Omole<\/a>, Callie Thorpe<\/a>, and Abby Bible<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen thrifting, I go through the men\u2019s section first. That\u2019s where I found this flannel, which is utterly perfect. I could buy oversized button-downs all day long. They\u2019re the staple of all staple pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweater:\u00a0S\u00e9zane<\/a>. Trench: Gap<\/a>. Pants:\u00a0Nikki Chasin<\/a>.\u00a0Shoes:\u00a0Converse<\/a>. Sunglasses:\u00a0Madewell<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI always thought trenches looked so cool on other women, so I finally decided to get my own. I call it my Inspector Gadget<\/a> coat. And I bought these pants at Nikki Chasin<\/a>, a boutique near me in the Hudson Valley. I was thrilled that they were not only available in my size, but in-store<\/em> too. That\u2019s basically unheard of when it comes to plus-size shopping!\u201d<\/p>\n

Heart necklace:\u00a0Monica Vinader<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cFor jewelry, I pretty much just wear simple hoops<\/a>, my wedding rings, and a necklace my dad gave me in high school. Then, sometimes, I\u2019ll add this heart locket from Monica Vinader<\/a>. I engraved it with the words \u2018lovely as is,\u2019 as a reminder to myself that I don\u2019t need to change to be worthy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dress: \u201cold D\u00f4en,\u201d similar<\/a>. Sweater: J.Crew, no longer available, similar<\/a>. Boots: Shoes of Prey, no longer available, similar<\/a>. Scarf: \u201cold ASOS,\u201d similar<\/a>. Wedding band: Bario Neal<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a teenager, I watched the movie\u00a0Bright Star<\/em><\/a>, which tells the love story of poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne. I was so enamored with all the costumes, colors, and textures. At the time, I was growing up in Florida, wearing popped collars and Uggs \u2014 but that movie helped me find my true personal style.\u201d<\/p>\n

Overalls: Gap<\/a>. Top: Damson Madder<\/a>, no longer available, similar<\/a>. Shoes: Converse<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never worn an item of clothing more than I\u2019ve worn these overalls from Gap. I like pairing overalls with something that reads more feminine, like a billowy top or this leopard-print one. My clothing style is like my home style: classic, but a bit eclectic.\u201d<\/p>\n
