The organization behind the Academy Awards released new Oscar rules<\/a> on Friday, including several that address the use of generative artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said that only performances \u201ccredited in the film\u2019s legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent\u201d will be eligible for Academy Awards. Similarly, the academy said that screenplays must be \u201chuman-authored\u201d to be eligible.<\/p>\n The academy also said it has the right to request more information about a film\u2019s AI usage and \u201chuman authorship.\u201d<\/p>\n These rule changes come as an independent film is in the works with an AI-generated version of Val Kilmer<\/a>, as AI \u201cactress\u201d Tilly Norwood keeps making headlines<\/a>, and as new video models<\/a> are causing at least a few filmmakers to make sweeping declarations of despair. AI was also one of the main sticking points in the actors\u2019 and writers\u2019 strikes<\/a> back in 2023.<\/p>\n Outside Hollywood, at least one novel has been pulled by its publisher<\/a> due to the apparent use of AI, and other writers\u2019 groups are declaring that AI usage makes work ineligible for awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
