(Hammond Police Department)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lake County prosecutors have indicated that they will seek a life prison term for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/indiana-bar-massacre-fueled-by-10k-horseshoe-hammond-casino-loss\/\">Caprice Cashaw<\/a>, 32, who is accused of killing bartender Paul Olivares, 25, and patron Lorraine Reyna, 59.<\/p>\n<p>Cashaw opened fire both outside and inside the bar with a semiautomatic weapon in the early hours of March 30, 2025, after losing several thousand dollars at the casino.<\/p>\n<p>Three others were seriously injured in the shooting, including Cashaw\u2019s girlfriend who was hit ten times but survived. He faces two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Moments Before Attack<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On the night of March 30, Cashaw and his girlfriend left the casino at around 3:10 a.m. and began arguing about money. Court records allege heavy gambler Cashaw lost at least $7,000 that night. He began assaulting her while driving, court filings state.<\/p>\n<p>Cashaw stopped the car outside the Portside Pub at around 3.30 am and continued to physically assault his girlfriend for six minutes, according to court filings. When the people inside the bar became aware of what was happening, four, including Olivares and Reyna, went outside to intervene.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>When his girlfriend tried to escape into the bar, Cashaw opened fire, hitting her multiple times in the back and killing Olivares and Reyna. Olivares was shot in the head, while Reyna sustained numerous gunshot wounds, according to court filings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The girlfriend collapsed halfway inside. Cashaw then fired into the bar, hitting one man multiple times. Another woman was shot in the leg while hiding in a walk-in cooler.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018I Shot Everyone\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cashaw later told police that he \u201cshot everyone at the Portside Pub\u201d and was aware of his actions when he did so, according to court documents.<\/p>\n<p>The bar, which has since closed, paid tribute to the victims in a Facebook post shortly after the shooting.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p>Paul and Lorrie both had hearts of gold and truly loved people,\u201d the bar\u2019s owners wrote. \u201cThey were great people who were so kind to everyone and with their big hearts they would never hesitate to help someone.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cLorrie was known for a long time for her generosity and the way she always made you feel like a friend. Both will never be forgotten.
