ModRetro, the vintage gaming startup by Palmer Luckey, is in talks to raise funding at a $1 billion valuation, according to the Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n The company launched its first product, a Game Boy-style handheld device called the Chromatic<\/a>, in 2024. The Verge\u2019s Sean Hollister said<\/a> it \u201cmight be the best version of the Game Boy ever made,\u201d but found it hard to separate from Luckey\u2019s reputation as founder of defense tech startup Anduril Industries.<\/p>\n \u201cIf Lockheed Martin made a Game Boy, would you buy one?\u201d Hollister asked.<\/p>\n Luckey said last year<\/a> that he\u2019d been trying to build a Game Boy-inspired device \u201coff and on as a hobby for almost seventeen years now\u201d and described the Chromatic as the result of \u201chundreds of irrational decisions\u201d\u00a0 that made it \u201can uncompromisingly authentic celebration of everything that made the console special.\u201d<\/p>\n The FT reports that ModRetro is working on other devices, including one designed to replicate the Nintendo 64.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the Trump administration appears to have embraced Luckey\u2019s vision for autonomous weapons<\/a>, with Anduril reportedly in talks<\/a> to raise a new funding round at a $60 billion valuation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
