(image: Malcolm Lubliner/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

Weir’s career began almost accidentally. On New Year’s Eve 1963, the 16-year-old wandered into Dana Morgan’s Music Store in Palo Alto after hearing Jerry Garcia playing banjo inside. That meeting sparked a partnership that evolved from Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions to the Warlocks and, in 1965, to the Grateful Dead.

After Garcia died in 1995, Weir became the connective tissue between the eras. He carried the repertoire and ethos forward through RatDog, Furthur, Wolf Bros, and ultimately Dead & Company, whose critically hailed and sold-out Sphere residency — 48 shows from May 2024 to May 2025 — proved that neither the Dead’s cultural nor commercial gravity had faded.

Weir was diagnosed with cancer in July 2025, we know now, and began treatment shortly before returning to San Francisco for a three‑night celebration of the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary at Golden Gate Park — performances described by his family as “gifts,” not farewells.

He leaves behind a body of work that reshaped American live music, a legacy built on reinvention rather than nostalgia, and a family requesting privacy as they grieve.

Source link

Posted on: January 10, 2026, 06:38h. Last updated on: January 10, 2026, 06:39h.
