Sutherland &#8211; AncientPages.com &#8211; <\/strong>An ancient myth says that at the beginning of time, there was a legendary king of the\u00a0Picts, Cruithne\u00a0(from the Gaelic word: &#8216;An Cruithain&#8217; (Pict) &#8211;\u00a0 naturally, &#8216;painted people,&#8217; was a son of Cing (in Gaelic: &#8216;strong or brave&#8217;).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancientpages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pr_cruithne.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-124866\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancientpages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pr_cruithne.jpg\" alt=\"Cruithne: Legendary King, His Seven Sons And The First Celtic Tribe That Inhabited British Isles\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientpages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pr_cruithne.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.ancientpages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pr_cruithne-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"YPkS7KbdpWfGdYKd3QB9\" data-src-align=\"0:5\">Important<\/span> <span class=\"YPkS7KbdpWfGdYKd3QB9\" data-src-align=\"6:12\">to note that t<\/span>he name Cruthin, (Cruithne or Cruithnigh,) however, has survived even to this day in the Lowland Scots dialect as \u201c<em>Creenie<\/em>\u2019\u2019, which means a servant or working man of Galloway. The end of the eighth century wasn&#8217;t any easy time for the Cruthin in Ulster.<\/p>\n<p>King Cruithne (often called the &#8220;father of the Picts&#8221;) is a legendary figure from early medieval Irish and Scottish mythology, and also a founder and the first king of the Picts. It is said that he reigned for a hundred years, or even 135 years, and had seven sons whose names were: Fib, Fidach, Foclaid (or Fotla), Fortrenn, Caitt (or Cat), Ce, and Circenn.
